Considering relocating to Texas

-
I have lived alone a few times in the last few years even though I have been married for 19 years. My work sometimes leads me to "details" on other forests and I get a barracks room or an apartment.
We have a very large garden and I really enjoy home cookin' more than anything so I had to learn and I found that it is much much cheaper than eating out. My go to is to buy a whole chicken, potatoes, carrots, celery, and other vegetables that are tasty when cooked in chicken broth. I cook the chicken in the oven with all the cut vegetables in broth nestled around the bird. I cover with tin foil and bake it. I can get a couple 3 or 4 nights out of it.
Another cheap and healthy chicken meal is to buy one of those cheap rotisserie chickens that are always too overcooked and fall off the bone. De-bone the chicken an mix with mayonnaise, whole cranberries, and celery or apple chunks. I like to make a Walnut Chicken Salad Sandwich with cranberry sauce spread on a sour dough bread. I got that inspiration from a discontinued Arby's sandwich. You can get almost a whole week of lunch sandwiches out of a rotisserie chicken.
You can really save money if you don't mind eating the same thing night after night. That's how our ancestors did. They didn't have 130 different restaurants and Uber Eats. We try to live like that. We will go out to eat, maybe, once a 2 week pay period. We pickle a lot of our food and eat alot of eggs from our chickens. We grow squash, zucchini, tomatoes, potatoes, kale, okra, kale, ....
If you're looking for a good woman get yourself into gardening and hit up the farmers market. It will provide some income and attract women who eat healthy and ar into guys that prove they can provide.

Well sadly for some reason I don't enjoy cooking at all it's basically a chore to me but those sound like good options. I love taking home leftovers from my mom's meals but if I eat something more than ~3 days in a row I start hating it and don't want it for another month. But given my situation I guess I need to stop being picky that way, 'beggars can't be choosers' and all that.

Lose the Therapist. There is some extra cash right there..

It's 100% covered under my health insurance so it costs me nothing. Being raised in a multicultural household but being surrounded by white Americans all day every day and following a religion nobody around me understands (although it's actually not that different) makes me feel pretty dang alienated. This Polish psychologist I see once every two weeks really helps, best they could do when I requested someone with multicultural background lol but he's a cool dude.

I need to get out of here.

I do best when I work alone, all day, every day..always have/
But I learned to work with/along all kinds if people. Sometimes that is what a job/life demands. I respected the fact they came from different countries/cultures, whatever. Did all of em like me, or respect me, did some hate me?? Probably some of each. If someone felt they needed to kick my ***, (back in my younger days) I said, bring it on, it won't be the first time I had my *** kicked. I admit these guys were not white collar pencil pushers.
Point is, we all understand in life there are always unfairness directed toward people, just because: race, sex, religion, height, weight, IQ, wealth or lack of, you name it. Heck, there are even people that drive Chevies and hate us Mopar guys!!!!:realcrazy:
By the way, I have a Mopar bud that refuses to eat any left over. I asked his wife how she put up with that!!!!:BangHead:

I hear that. Things could be a lot worse, I never have people acting hateful or disrespectful towards me which I'm thankful for. People here are generally very kind, friendly, open, caring etc. It's just the long-term effects of being away from "my kind of people" that has slowly but steadily gotten me more depressed over the years. It's weird too when everyone around you at work, at the store, at the gym, looks the same, talks the same, have the same interests... it's just lame and boring. I appreciate your input in this thread btw it's all been very helpful.

Lol I love leftovers, some food is even better leftover like my mom's clam chowder, beef stew, chicken biryani... when those flavors have an extra day to soak into everything it's even more tasty. It's just when I have to eat the same thing 3+ days in a row it rapidly becomes not tasty to me anymore. But hey, it's food, keeping myself healthy and saving money is more important than my food being perfectly delicious every meal.

I hate to tell you this but moving to rural anywhere with what you just wrote tells me if you aren't happy now were you are, you won't be happy were you are thinking of moving
Go were the money and opportunities are, go we're a population of people having the same faith as you live. You can interconnect and have more of a semblance of what is important to you
You need to seriously think this through, there is a lot of variables at play here

That's totally correct, I don't plan to live in a rural area the first few years or so after I relocate. I ultimately do prefer "country life" but not until I have a family of my own. Yeah there's the part that started the political stuff earlier in the thread regarding urban areas but gotta make compromises somewhere. I'll probably love living in or near a city then after a few years be saying "I need to get out of here" again lol.

Question for TX residents, are gun laws more strict in the urban areas? Not that I have one (yet) but are they not friendly to concealed carry with a permit? And let's please keep the answers non-political...

Constitutional carry here or A carry permit lets you go to more places ....even a school parkinglot

I moved to Texas in 1999 , stayed until 2014 .. I lived near and in Fort Worth, was pretty lucky or maybe it just was me but, I fell into a great circle of friends ( most of them native Texans) I rented a shop condo in Keller , then it was out in the country , never did like July and August I would come home for a couple months to avoid the heat .

For those not familiar with HEAT , It just never let's up ..even my Texas friends are tired of it , I Remember one year . it never got below 95 for 62 days , not even at 1 am in the morning .

The economy slid in 2008-20012ish .. my situation changed, my company changed , my boss retired .. I wanted to go home and did , best move for me .

I still love Texas ( most of it anyway) but, won't move back anytime soon, its really changed since then ..

I've lived in Texas all my life (except military time)...........................................if the temp drops below 80 degrees I put on my sweater.

How the leaders of any city or anywhere else for that matter, handles crime, it affects every citizen. Call it politics or whatever.

^^^^^^^ We've all seen how that works out
I believe life is a series of tradeoffs and the best anyone can do is make compromises that work for them

Alright I finally got my resume sorted out and cover letter written, sent in my application to Bell Textron in Fort Worth last night for a propulsion systems engineer (designing engines for the new VTOL military aircraft). Next up will be Blue Origin in West, TX for a rocket engine test manufacturing engineer. Got a list of 15+ positions in Texas saved on Indeed right now and more seem to pop up every week or so.

West Texas would be a no for me , unless you like dust , dirt and wind

Beggars can't be choosers.

Just because I apply doesn't mean I'm set on going there. We'll see who gets back to me, if I "pass" the interview, and what they offer me. Also just realized Blue Origin was founded by Jeff Bezos which doesn't thrill me lol. Might try some others first.

Texas is hot as hell, and humid. Everything tries to bite you or kill you. As someone who isn’t from TX, but lived there for several years in the most liberal city(Austin) I am stunned to hear you say you want to move to TX to escape the homogeny of CO. TX is very white, and white or not they all wear cowboy hats and listen to the same music. Lots of white boys who use the N word openly. I’ve heard plenty of discussions about Muslims but never anything polite or positive. Next to Alabama or West Virginia I don’t think you could make a worse pick than Texas if your true desires are a multi-cultural and accepting society. I lived in Austin, Round Rock and Cedar Creek for reference, and a total of 5 years in TX. My wife is a 9th Generation Texan, and she won’t go back.

It didn't make sense to me either at first but I've seen the ICNA headquarters in Dallas and ate halal pepperoni pizza in Houston (halal anything doesn't really exist in CO). According to this Muslim Population by State 2022 Texas has the second-largest population of Muslims after California at almost 30 million, Colorado has 6 million (which are mostly East African immigrants and refugees in the greater Denver area). There are 62 mosques in Dallas alone. Even though Austin is the most liberal city it's kind of ironically still majority white by race. Makes me think of the city of Boulder, CO, everyone is obnoxiously up-their-own-@$$ liberal but the University of Colorado campus there is statistically one of the least-diverse schools in the country in terms of races and ethnicities.

Spending the last 3 years or so on a Muslim dating/matrimonial app I found that a significant number (at least 20%) of the profiles were in Texas. By comparison I'd see 2-3 profiles in Colorado per week or less which is like 2%.

Saying all that, who knows maybe I'd still have a terrible experience and not find what I'm looking for. I have to try something different though because 17 years in Colorado hasn't gotten it. I've visited states in all regions of the U.S. and for me personally my experiences in Texas so far were pretty positive. Yeah it's hot and humid but by comparison I've visited the UAE several times to see family and lived in Dubai for a year, from about April to October you can't spend more than 5-10 minutes outside because it's consistently over 110 degrees and 80% humidity. It sucks but in contrast sure beats 3-week periods of dark heavy cloud cover and chilling temps with piles of brown salty road slush like you get in the midwest and northeast (I grew up in Pennsylvania). Colorado climate overall is pretty ideal but I can't have it all. It does get into occasional below-zero temps in Jan-Feb-Mar here though which I won't miss.

It sounds like you already made up your mind, I just wanted to inject some personal experience.

I was just in Austin last week for my brother in laws wedding. His bride is Muslim. We ate Saudi food, and the men danced traditional Saudi dance. But even the Muslim dudes were in Cowboy hats and lined danced to Garth Brooks.

Texas is for Texans, if you don’t assimilate, you won’t feel like you fit in. Same goes for anywhere though I guess. I’m from So Cal, I ain’t wearing no cowboy hat, and Luke Bryan is not real music.

I wish you luck with your decision and safe travels if you do move there. Get ready for some of the best food you’ll ever eat!

I know in earlier post I called Houston a chit hole. Only reason is because of crime and liberal politics. Illegal immigrants irritate me because they are illegal. But forget all that.
I mentioned Houston because I understand it has a huge population of Indian, Phillipino, all sorts of ethnics, etc.
My wife does "country r/e and has for 15 years. I mention this, as we have 2 of out best Customers from Houston and are Indian. They are our only "commercial" customers, but it is always big $ when it does happen. Usually involves a couple of years to do a deal (feast or famine!). So we have a lot of experience with this group. I only mention this as sometimes these contacts prove helpful to others, as in networking.

Texas is not for the weak of heart!!

I have found that anytime to are somewhere besides "home" a person needs to try to fit in and NOT tell the locals what a bunch of ignorant, misguided, back *** rednecks they are...even if they are!!!!!!!:poke::thumbsup: Please not I did not call any body that!!!!!!!

Those guys putting on that hat tells everyone they approve of the western lifestyle even if they own not a cow or horse, and they want to fit in.

I mean that does sound pretty cringe-worthy but not much worse or better than the bicycle-riding, craft beer-drinking, rock-climbing, Subaru-driving, Phish-listening subculture that's prevalent here. When I did field work in Wichita Falls, TX I actually bought a cheap cowboy hat from a gas station because my head and neck were getting annihilated from the sun lol so I have no problem wearing one for practical reasons. Tbh I kinda like the way they look. I did grow up watching a lot of Westerns with my maternal grandpa...

Oh and good to hear about the food, here it's generally bland and lacks flavor. I haven't had decent pizza or Italian food since the last time I visited my mom's family near the Pennsylvania-New Jersey border. Not that I'd expect Texas to have killer Italian food but traditional ethnic food just generally sucks in Colorado. Even the "Texas BBQ" places here are a joke, I can smoke brisket myself that has way more flavor and I'm a rookie at it.

Hahaha! I could see myself prepping for a trip out into the boonies rocking a cowboy hat and my Browning Hi-Power or .44 Mag Ruger single-action in an underarm holster while driving my '72 Dodge pickup. Don't mess with me, I won't mess with you! Lol

Here we go again.
Did "liberal politics" savagely kill 19 little children? Did those murders happen in Houston?
Are children attending school more or less safe in rural parts of Texas?

If you noticed I just mentioned forget about my comments on Houston (which still stand), but the purpose of the OP thread is not to argue about Dem or Rep politics.
Murders can happen anywhere. They just happen more when there are more sorry people and the law is more liberal and forgiving. Just my opinion, just mine, but we are not here to get the last word in on such.
The OP is looking for good info as to where he needs to live and work. Just that simple.

Then before we had the last mayor why was NYC having the lowest murder rate in the country?
Common sense governing and having the best police force in the country is one reason
No liberal politician comes into office and changes every law on the books
Biased politicians, ones who bend to certain groups come in all flavours, I shouldn't have to remind you that Texas has one of the most incompetent senators in the country
The OP seems to have his mind made up about moving, I wish him luck
