From my understanding the '71 gas cap was a one-year-only. '71 Duster 340. I currently have a lockable cap on mine and want to replace it with a paintable, original style. Before I start a WTB ad, can you guys confirm this is in fact the case? And if so, will any A-body '71 cap work, or is that yet another unique aspect of the cap?

If you do not have the extra venting tube in the trunk and only have the filler tube you need a vented gas cap. I believe they make them now aftermarket as well.
I've pulled the trigger on ordering 3x so far from other sources over the last several months. Each time resulted in a return/refund due to unavailability or non-fitment upon receipt. Ordered vented and non-vented both with no success. Began to give up hope thinking maybe it's just no longer available. It's been a while since I checked, but I don't recall having the extra vent tube. But the car does have under the hood what appears to be the early start of emissions, being born in LA. I have parts arrive 2-3x a week for other vehicle repairs I have going regularly at my place, but this one is getting a bit frustrating. But I'll keep trying...

That's the way my 71 is set up.

I went through that too. I got my cap from Jeff @ https://521restorations.com/ The rubber seal rips easily but I scarfed one from another cap that I had bought, didn't fit, and wasn't worth returning.

I'll post some pics later of what my setup is. Maybe you guys can help me make up my mind on which wrong cap to order again

Fair enough?

From previous pics and this one, no additional tube. But looks like this has what looks like the beginning of emissions?

@toolmanmike is there a way I can move this thread to Fuel and Air? Or is this something I'd need your assistance on? I posted the pics too btw...

you need to find the 71 type by the looks of your setup, or if you cant change the fill tube might work

I'm running into the same dilemma. In the above pic the '71 cap is what I had back in the day before I left it on the trunk and drove off (1997). I have yet to find one that fits the same and locks in place when you turn it. Only ones that fit just keep spinning although they do get "snug" and that's when i quit turning it. Any luck on finding a good replacement that actually works??
