Headers vs 340 manifolds

-
Here is always the question: What are you going to do with the car? Are you trying to be serious at the drag strip, are you going to drive it on the street 99% of the time? The lower the rpms, the smaller the difference between the two. If you are actually going to drive this on the street, after you bottom out the headers where they hang out from under the car and smash them to half their original size, I bet the manifolds with undamaged pipes will beat them. It's fun to compare things on a dyno including a new set of pristine headers, or if the car is just going to roll off the trailer and onto the drag strip and never see road miles, that's one thing, but that isn't where many of us actually enjoy our cars. Many headers have to be beaten on and compromised just to get them in the car.

Mopar action did a before and after test on extrude home 340 manifolds, 5 hp. Not worth the money, but I can’t remember the rest of the engine build.
Yeah if that's all they get, to hell with um. LOL

the test above got 9 hp 340s to 1 5/8 full length
the sound is worth it i miss it
9 hp@5500 is not
The test makes no mention to carb/timing changes, only manifold changes. Need more information on the parameters for this shoot out.

Exactly. No one ever just slaps headers on and not tune for them....well maybe a dumbass. Headers will lean one out and make it need more fuel. Once you do that, all bets are off as the headers will blow by manifolds in the power department......speakin long tubes of course. I still say for mild street cars, manifolds are forever. They are nice as far as that goes. That said, I am still going to put my headers on my F250 when I swap the Ford 400 in in a few days. Remflex gaskets everywhere and they'll never leak.

you dont think west tech dialed it in? come on now
its a known fact many dyno test compared the 2 on a mild motor its not worth much 900 bucks fck no
if guys can run 11s and 12s with them that says enough imo
never mind the 10 second f a s t cars
900 bucks on tti never
thats twin stage 250 hp shot of juice

Funny (not really) that a good set of headers cost as much as a used set of 340 manifolds or more.

there is a set for 400 listed today tti are double that

Those test did not change the carb setting IIRC. If set up for the logs, headers aren't going to make as big of a change.

FAST cars are a totally different animal. Same as people that think Stock Eliminator cars are "stock" :)

If 340 manifolds were the same as headers, stock or super stock cars wouldn't run headers. Those guys are after any marginal gain.
One 340 I have ran like a dang 3 legged crippled dog with 68-70 free flowing (yeah that's it) exh manifolds. Only change was a set of header and it ran totally different, much better.

Tube compression doesn't generally have a negative change on performance. Hang low headers suck IMO.

A good, tuned header will make the engine rich. If the header makes the engine lean they are either the wrong header or the cam timing is jacked up. Or both.

then they prolly didnt need to
you dont think they would have dialed it in like you would have?
look how small the cam is in a 360 no less 10 hp is right
11s with manifols means what? nothing?
nobody said they dont help
i saw plenty of built cars running slower then stock
thr world is filled with dunderheads
f a s t cars still did it on chitless tires to boot
ill bow out

same deal as guys that I used to beat running nitrous. They'd rather do it without. Cool.

Same approach as headers. I used to tell complainers... Build your best piece running manifolds or NA, I slap a set of headers or a juice unit on it and beat you with your own stuff.

Ask the FAST guys if they would rather run headers to maximize ET... Many of those cars would run a LOT faster... A LOT!!!

The higher the HP, generally the bigger the gains. 300hp base engine doesn't have a lot of upside.
All good.

Can you splain please?

Actually lemmie guess. A good header will make the engine pull more air which in turn makes it pull more fuel.

lol so you are complaining about cars that run 11 seconds with manifolds could be 10.50s with headers
nobody can admit 11s with manifolds means they work
its but but but you are leaving x hp on the table
run what ya brung complaining is for babys
the guy in his 2600 lb vega with 4.56s complained about my nitrous just a lil 340 27 inch tires 3.23s trapping in 2nd his motor made chit for hp idled at 1800 rpm ran 105 mph pos
thats all i heard you are cheating with nitrous buncha wimps

Makes sense.

And with that pull it’s pulling on the booster harder, pulling more fuel. That’s what it’s all about with a carb. Pulling on that booster. Pull more fuel, use a smaller jet and make more power.

Of course, there are some who can’t grasp this but it doesn’t change the science behind it.

exactly right. you can't just throw parts at it and expect each component to be an extra 20hp

as stated before, it's just an air pump. select parts that make it effective and then massage the peripherals to make it efficient.

Engine Masters did a dyno test on headers where they beat the **** out of them with a hammer and had little effect on hp.

Here's mods to a mild 360 manifold's vs headers starts at 5:15

I assume nothing, if they would have tuned the carbs and ignition timing, they would mention it.

Running 11’s and 12’s doesn’t prove ****, just the motor making at least 350-400 peak hp. You can run 11’s with 900 Hp if you can’t drive.

It’s apparent to anyone reading your post that you have a hard on for manifolds. Cool, run manifolds. You don’t care about an extra 9hp? Sweet, I don’t care about you making 9 extra Hp either.

dont forgot the 10s
yeah 500 to 650 crank no big deal without headers grab that at walmart or burger king
900 hp lol isnt that special
ive used headers on every motor but 1 please continue
Do i hear name calling next for 300 alex?

Nice job moving the goal post. Another one on the list.

Do you need directions to the field? that might be apparent
the midnight swinger list
so many list on the internet do you back them up in the cloud?
