Ok so has anyone experienced this before. My 73 dart when you turn the ignition and put the car in gear - cold or warm it feels like the gas is sloshing around in the tank and then it feels like the brakes are dragging - I’ve already had the brakes and the parking brake looked at twice and the first time one wheels brakes were holding and the second time it had to do with the parking brake which is disconnected now. I Still have the problem and it is extremely annoying to drive like this. Any ideas as to what is causing the problem thanks

The car has a 225 with a rebuilt transmission

It sounds like you may need to see a different mechanic with regards to the brakes. Something is not right if they are dragging. Can't help with the sloshing gas other than think the brakes are so messed up that your car doesn't coast at all when you back up or whatever??

I have a factory tank that is baffled if you're interested, which will eliminate all of your fuel sloshing.

The first thing I would do in your situation is get a factory Chrysler service manual for your car. Read it and familiarize yourself with it.

I don't understand what you are saying...........You talking about stopping, the brakes grab and pull, or what? Can you be more specific?

I put the car in gear and it just feels like something is holding on so the car doesn’t want to go

Perhaps the trans is slipping?

What stall speed is your converter?

Did it do this before the trans rebuild?

Is the trans fluid at the correct level.

Get an infrared thermometer and go for a drive. Use the brakes lightly, if there is a hill in your area and you can coast to a stop going up safely (ie without using the brakes to stop) put it in park and check the temp of all 4 drums / disks

If you really have a dragging brake that is keeping the car from moving correctly, the temperature will show it

jack the car up in neutral and spin the wheels by hand....are they spinning free? (slight drag is ok). If you want to isolate the trans being the issue remove the driveshaft if the rear wheel feels like it sticks. You need to isolate where the issue is.

Could be brakes, rear, wheel bearings, or trans binding somewhere.

THIS would be my first step.

How long ago was the trans rebuilt?

You want a slight drag on the drum brakes. The rear drums shouldn't just pull right off with no force but you shouldn't feel like the shoes are gripping the hell out of the drums when pulling them off either. You should be able to feel that the drum and shoes are making contact when pulling the drums off and on but not enough to where a bunch of force needs to be used.

Before you attempt to pull the drums off, hit them with a mallet a few times just in case there is any rust making them feel like they're set too tight when in fact it's just the rust holding the drum to the axle. After that you should be able to slip the drum off and on with a fairly low amount of force. If it feels like the shoes are holding on to the drums for dear life, you either have them set too tight or the e brake is stuck.
