Torqueflite 904, recently rebuilt, was having zero issues shifting between park, R N D. I had to replace neutral safety switch because it was leaking, as well as the seal where the selecter cable enters the transmission. Everything is back together and so far not leaking, but I'm noticing that I can go park -> reverse -> neutral -> drive just fine, but I'm having issues going backwards. I can get it into park but I cant shift from drive to neutral or even reverse, I have to go to park then back down to reverse. Not sure where to start on this.

Thinking through this, I'm thinking the new neutral safety switch might be binding up the arms that press it when its travels between P R N D. Gonna pull the switch and file it down some.

It sure does seem like an external issue. I think you are on the right track.

Remove the new switch and compare how deep the new one goes in to the old one.

I had to move from a single post to a 3-prong, but I did notice the part that contacts the arm was a bit taller. I filed it down and gave it a taper like the old one, but I'm thinking I need to go further with it. Going to get underneath it this afternoon and pull the switch. Thanks for all the input.

Okay, I trimmed the tip of the neutral safety switch to match the one it replaced. Still having the same issue, I can shift down from P to R, to N, to D but not back up. Not sure where to go from here.
