Factory Small Block Heads

Got to be careful what's under the 2.02's. I personally have taken the valve out and was shocked what was underneath. No bowl blend for the bigger valve.

Looks about the same as a trombone bell. Tulip valve may not fit in that head. :rolleyes:

Yes, they crack. Magnums, 302's, 308's are prone to cracking BUT most people don't even know they are cracked and are driving all over with them. Cracks "most of the time" are not in a place that seems to affect them.

Have to agree, but if I'm going to put the time and effort into a set of heads, I'm not going to start with a cracked head. Most of time for a slight gain, like the heads we grew up with weren't fast enough...
 
I should had looked at the numbers but got caught up in the heads being already ported. Sorry I do not have the head numbers in front of me but my machine shop told me they are good to go and not worry about it since they were ported identical.

Had a 70 340 car, X on one side J the other. Factory didn't seem to care about it. :)

I had 2 different heads on my 273 as well. Also one of the rod bearings was dated 71 where the rest were 66. Something came loose along the way and was fixed.

What would happen if a guy put a X head on left side, and a 318 smog head on the right side, a custom ground cam that one bank had stock 318 specs, and the other bank had .470 lift/230 duration, left side header, right side 318 manifold... you get the picture.... lol little off topic but... :D

The untouched, numbers matching 340 in my 70 Challenger A66 has a J on one side and an O on the other side. They apparently just grabbed whatever was next in line. They were all the same except the casting letter anyway.

Not bad? Those are gifts if the valves aren't sunk too deep. That's the price of the head and tearing it off the engine.

How they are able to rebuild with new components is beyond me. Got to be Indians working to starve and bringing them over here in a row boat. Uh
 
For anyone wanting a factory style cast iron LA head, Indy Cylinder supposedly bought up a bunch of unfinished brand new castings and is now offering them in finished form. Looks like they are live on the Indy website now.

i mean if you have to have factory cast heads that's not a bad deal, considering the current market and what machine shop costs are.

but 10* locks, 74cc chambers, singles with a dampener and ummmm-brella seals does not stir my tingly bits.
 
I will say, on an "almost complete stock" 360, going from 360 heads (as cast) to OOTB speedmaster heads, the et dropped about 2 tenths if I recall correctly. I think half of a tenth would be in the weight difference. So, only about 1.5 tenths in actual performance. Obviously, the cam wasn't designed to take advantage of the SM heads, but still it's what the track showed in that circumstance.

Don't think the crank would like it. They say an V8 is just 8 separate engines with one crank, guess there would be a civil war between banks.
 
Another test:
I pulled fresh J heads 2.02's for home ported (socket and dremel and eyeball LOL) 360 smog heads and dropped about 2.5 tenths in track proven test

The exhaust note at idle would sound funky. lol
 

Probably be similar if a 340 had one bank with terrible ring seal.

how many engines have run many a mile with 2 cylinders way down on power due to split exhaust valves, fouled plug, or whatever. yet, the crank does just fine :)
 
Tuning it to hear each cylinder fire would be a *****. not gonna get an even sound. lol
 
How much horsepower difference per bank could be tolerated, 10%,15%,20%.......... lol

I didn't mean the crank would break or anything, but must add stress to it.

I drove a /5 home plus one rod hanging out the side, it was somewhat functional :)
