Anyone have a build list to build a 440 with 500 plus horse?
Running 727 auto
Looking for a complete build list of parts

You need to find a copy of "Old Reliable The Practical 440 Race Motor" by Don Dulmage. They are tough to find, but that's one of the best builds that's ever been.

Short block with pistons at zero deck and Trick flow top end kit topped with a Holley 850 dp and headers.
Should be good for well over 500 horsepower

there you go making it hard. lol
I submitted a recipe in a box.
Starting from scratch 500+ reliable HP is gonna cost 10- 15 grand depending on if the OP can source any serviceable used parts at a decent price.

I seem that build I just wonder if the cam is very choppy and rough idle

what's your budget and/or timeline?

if you want it right now and have the cash to splash head on over to 440 source and pick up one of their 500" stroker flavors and a set of TF heads and an intake. grab a cam that's got about 280 duration and just a tick over .500 lift and you're in like flynn.

more budget oriented and not in a rush? spend all your money on heads. the rest comes together with reasonable compression (10.5:1), good machine work (zero-deck, prepped rods) and a big cam (290+ & .550+). most of that stuff can be found for sale here from time to time if you're patient.

talking about scrounging for loose change in the couch, beer budget, shoe string budget? a smogger 440 with ported factory cast iron heads, a .509 cam and single plane can lay down 450, massaging that combo you could probably find another 50hp

anyway, the short of it is heads. the answer is heads. spend your money on heads and the power is there.

This build has a 285/297 comp cam, I wonder if that is a very rough idle?

I would enjoy the rough idle
oh, i'm sorry. i misconstrued your comment as to the roughness of the idle.

yes, that XE285HL cam from the build is going to have a pretty lopey idle. it's on a 110 with near 300 duration.

anything over 280 and narrower than 112 is gonna sound pretty beefy.

Check back once you save the extra 5 grand.

If you want the best idle you can for 500+ hp buy a roller and maybe 1.6 rockers.

i think you could get there for 10K if you liked to gamble on used parts/assemblies and had a bit of luck.

it may not be refined, and it might not be super reliable, but it'd be fun!

That comes in the Trick flow top end kit along with gaskets for $5500, pretty good deal if you ask me.

There are some big block combos in there.
