Hi folks,
I have a 66 auto A904 that I am going to remove the transmission fluid pan, clean, change filter and reseal. What is the original paint color that I should have? I want to paint it while I’m at it and want to be as close as possible (unless you have a color code) to factory. Mine is black but was not sure if it is supposed to have a different color.

Would appreciate your help.

Got it. The POR-15 does have good feedback as far as being very resistant to water as well as high heat. I might give it a try

It's not resistant to UV light as it must be top coated.

Use the por-15, but get a can of black spray paint to top coat it. Neither trans nor transpan was painted from factory. Shoot it steel gray if you want it to look close to factory.

I hate when I buy a car with a painted pan, the paint is always chunking off and looks terrible. I would either powder coat it or buy a powder coated pan. ATF is a fairly decent paint remover after so many miles.

If you kind of want it to look factory, clean the outside surfaces of the pan with steel wool and degreaser, wipe it down with lacquer thinner and the spray the outside with clear, high heat paint. Goes without saying to not paint the inside...lol.

When i use por-15, i use the clear after ive put it into very small clear containers. Then i topcoat within a few hours at most..... that method ( plus some other prep) has vastly improved my opinion of the stuff

This maybe the best idea.... Rust-Oleum has several shades of grey that mimic steel. I like to shoot it on brake drums....no one ever seems to notice its paint at all.....just keeps looking factory new for years.

Thanks for all the tips! I removed the pan - it was warped and I was not able to get it as straight as I wanted. The seal was the cork version. I got a beautiful new pan from Summit Racing - it is a perfect fit. It is however a bit heavier. I used a rubber seal instead. New filter. And yes, I did add those 2 last bolts to the pan after this pic..was a bit tricky cause the file line is so close but eventually got it

The speedo cable was leaking too. I removed it and replaced the 2 o’ rings and that was pretty easy.

Amazing, how we switched from the original steel pan to the cast aluminum pan.

Why is that?? He said it was beat up.... im glad he found a decent aluminum one.....they are a real crap shoot these days. Ive had some SpeedMaster ones that needed surfacing and elongating holes!!! What a mess.

Glad he found one as well, but I have to say, I was a bit curious how we went from " original paint color" and "as close as possible to factory" and "color code" to a deep, bare as cast, finned aluminum pan with Summit cast into it, when there was concern that black was not correct enough.

Not that I care one way or another, I think the only thing in my car thats original is the roof skin, trunk lid, & back seat.

Nothing close to find on the internet as far as parts go. The pan is warped and I could not repair it to be flush enough. I wanted a drain plug and everything else that was closer to factory look did not have a fluid plug. Summit has a plug and looks clean. I like original too but when it gets that way I prefer it to work and not leak. Summit always looks good since these are hot rods.
