64 Dart 5.7 hemi update thread.

Good idea, I dont have one, but I think I saw them cheap. Ill probably need one anyway for other tight spots under the car. The cool thing is, this car has very little rust. All those brown spots are just a surface type rust, almost dust really. If i could have reached it, all those areas would be nice and clean metal like the other areas I cleaned up.

wil all the work you have done, if you can get a small snad blaster to blast the tight spots on the frame it would be very nice,, but since its not real hard rust,, more like dust as you put it,,,POR-15 is great stuff,,just make sure that area is done of you use por-15.. its hard to get off,,you will have to grind it,,and you cant weld thru it

I ordered some Eastwood Rust ecapsulater paint, I dont know if its as good as POR-15, but Ill give it a try. I got lots, and I mean lots of cleaning to do under my car. I think Ill prime up the front section so that I stop getting those tiny rust freckles, wish me luck.

If I were you I'd get a small sandblaster, maybe even one of those little handheld ones they sell for like 14 bucks, and take care of those little hard to reach areas. Once everything is blasted, clean it up good with a wax and grease remover, then spray 2 good wet coats of epoxy primer. Why use a rust encapsulator material when you have nice clean metal like that?

Hand held sand blaster, Ive never heard of one. Hmmm

I ordered my wheels recently. They are called Sapphire, and they are by Budnik. I know alot of guys here wont like them becasue they are bigger 17" wheels and they arent a 5 spoke mag, but i wanted to stray from the crowd a little, and they kinda (distantly) resemble my 64s stock hubcaps. It will be a few weeks before I get them, but Ive modified a few pics with the sapphire wheel added or its likeness anyway.
They are gonna be 17x7 with 5" bs (all four wheels). Im gonna have to get spacers for the rear setup and longer studs so that the wheels and tires will be clear of the leaf springs.

they are a really nice wheel, and perfect choice of size for an updated look without turning away the natural appeal of the car.

pretty cool looking and out of the ordinary for sure.

One word about the Dart/Sapphire combo: TIGHT! I *really* like the look of it. Definitely NOT belly button, although is ANY Dart belly button?
Here's a re-rendered Photoshop of it to see just how clean it would be.
Classy and cool, man :)

If your car comes out lookin like this its gonna be Sweeet!! That looks great! Those wheels and the overall look of your car suit the modern hemi that will sit under the hood, two thumbs up!!

Wow, thanks for the cleaned up wheels Shishaldin, also thanks everyone else for the kind words. I fought myself on wheel choice for sometime. I almost went with the Budnik Rocker, I saw them on a 67 convertible cuda in Mopar Collectors Guide last year, but I saw the sapphire and I thought they would look better on my 64. Like paint color, wheel choice drove me nuts.
I know its popular to have the rear wheels have a deeper dish or less back spacing, but I went with equal backspacing on all of my wheels because it wouldnt really show much on the 17x7 size wheel and I like the idea that all wheels can be interchanged.

GREAT CHOICE,, ive never seen those before but you are dcorrect, they kinda look like the orignal hub cap,,,

in you statement, you said 17x7 with a 5" B,S...did you meen 5x 4 .5 bs ??? if you ordered those wheels with a 5 " BOLT CIRCLE,, you are going to have problems,,,unles your changing a lot of brake hard ware,,,

Here's what it looks like. You just fill it with silica sand and blast away. I have a larger sandblaster, but for small areas where I don't need the larger unit, I break out this little fella. You have to refill it every few minutes, but if you have a smaller compressor, it gives the compressor a chance to catch up with the air requirement while you're refilling.

I really like those wheels. Great choice. :)

i think he meant backspace, not bolt circle.

You may already know this but you'll have to cut the front fenders on the bottom side to clear larger wheels. I have 26" X 4" tires with a 2 1/2 backspacing with lower fenders trimmed and it pretty close. You can see in the picture that the wheels are really sunk into the opening. I had American racing 14 X 6 and the largest dia I could pull off up front was almost 24". Goodluck with it anyways. Jysnflem

Thanks OldVart for the sandblaster tip, thatll save me some money and time.

Sorry fstfish66, didnt mean to confuse ya. Yes the bs, means backspace. I got the Mopar big bolt pattern. As far as the Sapphires, Id never seen them on any car in any magazine before or at any show, They are not even on Budniks main website. I was just looking up Budnik wheels as a google image search and I found someone selling them, then I went to these guys http://www.paradiseroadrc.com/ to see if they could still get them from Budnik, I didnt know if they were a discontinued wheel or not. For anyone looking for great deals on any wheel brand, check out the link above, these guys can get you good prices, and they take PayPal (along with every other for of payment).

Thanks jysnflem, I dig your 64 dart. I knew from some other early A members here with big wheels that things were gonna be close, I guess Ill see how much I have to work to get things to clear the tire. Im thinking of a 215/45/17 tire up front.
I will forsure post pics on how things come out on wheel and tire fitment, but it wont be till later this summer when I get the wheels and tires (6-8 weeks, but I hear with custom wheels it always takes longer). No rush though, this will give me time to finish up the undercarriage cleaning and suspension install. I still have to purchase rear brakes, brake lines, and rear studs for the axles.

I gotta get the Alterktion and rearend housing painted or powder coated, which should I do? I was thinking of powdercoating, but If anyone could suggest some good paint, I might go with it instead.

I wish I would have powdercoated mine along with my suspension parts. Would have only cost me $50 extra bucks. Do it all at once and save yourself some cash. It will cost you almost $25 in paint to do the rear axle anyways. My 2 cents bro.

I think your wheels will be fine. DJVCuda has 17" Coy's with no big problems. Very minor rubbing if I recall.

Nice re-rendition Daniel.

Dodgenut64,

Superb wheel choice. They totally fit the style of the car without being over the top.

I am really impressed with how good your car looks!!

Thanks MRGTX, If your talking about the blue 64, that one isnt mine, A member here photoshopped the Sapphire wheel on a pic of another 64. My 64 is still being worked on. The wheels wont reach me until this summer probably.
As far as the choice in wheel, it was something I had to ponder over the last few months. Sense wheels arent cheap, I didnt want to not be happy with them. I cant wait till they come in. Here is an unmodded pic of the same 64.

James-
Took a break from work and changed up the paint for ya. Here's that sandy tan 2009 Dodge Ram color (as close as I could get it) on your '64 (of course with the bitchin' Sapphire rims):

Cool. Looks a little lighter brown in color than the ram, but it gives me an idea. Thanks a bunch.

Heres a closer pic of the color of the 2009 ram. The color on top, its like a brownish, greyish, sandy color. I kinda like it.

Hey Shishaldin, Look what you inspired me to do. I checked out that website on the photoshop bible thing, althought I have pro paint 8, it wasnt too much different. I gotta figure out how to do more with this program. Theres gotta be a way to do more layers and change my interior. Also, after I got a color that i thought was good, I messed with the grey tones abit and it seemed to changed things even more. Thanks man, you inspired me to get into this paint pro stuff again, its very fun.

Sorry, I noticed there wasnt a pic. I was having trouble resizing it to fit on the site. How do you guys get your pics so big?
