How did this happen :-k
This old tree is pointing strait southeast to the St. Francis River below the mouth of the Little River in Poinsett County, Arkansas, the St. Francis is navigable by barge. It joins the Mississippi, I am not sure how old this tree is ,but it could be a marker made years ago to mark a direction to the river.
And with out erection he is still doing his job.:toothy7:

Oh NO ! Puff the magic dragon. We really going there ?

I was going to say the same thing as you and 68sedan (re: Chinese dragon`s head) but I thought that you guys would think I`d been hitting on those funny cigarettes.

That shoot is probably the remains of a root that may have run over a rock or a log. As the tree grew, the root rose up with the tree and finally died off after many years. Years ago I took a class in Bonsai, and many of the techniques that we were taught mimic odd things that happen in nature. Root over rock technique is one. You could easily see how a shoot can start downward.

Besides the dragon at the bottom of the limb, I see a man's face here.

LOL Mike. Looks like the dragon is coming out of the mans mouthe. That tree definately couldnt be considered a "hardwood" species!
