Hello,

I was out and about yesterday and stumbled across a pretty decent 1972 Scamp. Car is pretty solid, but will need some work for sure. I tend to buy anything Mopar that I can afford (cheap) but I have never really looked at a Scamp before. I am digging it for sure. He has alot of parts off of his other one that he may throw in.

A couple of questions:

1. About how many Scamps were made?

2. How does the weight compare to a Duster, heavier or lighter?

3. Are they more or less valued than a Dart, in your opinion?

I don't know that much about them, and I do kinda know the whole Demon, Duster Dart Sport hierarchy, but not much on the Scamp / Dart scene.

Oh........any pics of Scamps? I'd like to see them.

Thank you as always.

I am still learning about Scamps, I do think that they are considered a little brother of the Dart.

Okay.. 1972 Scamp production- 49,470

Weight- 2825 w/6, 2915 w/V8 (318 I assume)

Duster weight- 2780/2875, 3100 w/ 340.

As far as your third question, I guess it depends on what your mean by "valued".. based on what I see driving around and at shows, I'd say that the Dart Swinger is valued (as in "appreciated") about 50 times more. But in my opinion, their rarity makes them much cooler. Swingers are relatively common, but the last Scamp I saw was in a junkyard a year ago. I like their looks, and mechanically speaking of course, they've got the same potential for durability, reliability, and/or tirefrying as a Swinger, Demon, Duster, or any other A-body.

I have a '72 Scamp 318/3 speed stick car. They're cool cars. From the windshield forward they're Dusters and from the windshield back they're Darts.

I have a 71 Scamp with a 440. I really like the body with the Duster front. The value is lower on them then a Dart. They were a cheaper 318 or a slant 6 driver with A/C for a family car. Not alot of people have them. I think most of them were built in Canada.

Remember that a Scamp is a Dart with a Valiant nose on it, just like a Demon is a Duster with a Dart nose on it.

I seem to recall reading the following history somewhere:

Following Plymouth's success with the Duster in 1970, Dodge wanted the tooling to make their own version (Demon). In return, Dodge gave Plymouth tooling for Dart which turned into the 1971 Scamp. Plymouth ended up having much more success selling Scamps than Dodge ever did with the Demon.

Scamps were never "muscle cars" as we know them. The vast majority came with /6's. the largest motor available was the 318.

Personally, since they are not as popular as Darts or Dusters, I think they make a great (ie. cheap) alternative to hot rod and they can be real sleepers. I bought my '71 Scamp three years ago for $200.

There are quite a few Scamp threads in the "restorations" section. check them out to see what others have done.

I should find out today if the car is available. I am quite excited. I really prefer the nose of the Plymouths, but I have two Dart Sports so I have learned to love the beak!

More information to come. I hope things work out. There are very few Mopar cars around here compared to WA where I grew up. When I find them, I like to grab them since they are hard to find.

Here's my '72, 440/727 powered. I like the fact that it's not a Dart, and the comments you get at the gas station. "My grandma had one just like that when I was young". Not like this one she didn't, unless she was from Pasadena maybe!

That's a nice looking Scamp Downtime; and a 440 to boot!!! You must have had a lot of fun shoving that much motor into the Scamp's engine compartment.

I haven't owned the Scamp in a few years, but it was a sweet ride. I loved it and should have kept it but my automotive ADHD kicked in.

I love the 440 Scamp there. That is prime screensaver material.

Grassy, as far as the hierarchy goes it is easy. Just try and sell both and see which one goes first! I liked my 440 DS, but it was NOT an easy car to sell.

There are so few around here left on the road that any A body is a good A body :)

...but we will never be a B body...
