A guy who lives down the road from me has some police heads off a 360 that have been rebuilt. 2.02/1.62 valves from what he says. From what he says, these heads are great for performance. he was talking about selling them to me for 400. How good are these heads? Im trying to get around 400 hp from my build.

No such thing as "Police Intercepter heads." Al heads are the same reguardless of application save the 340 T/A or 6 pak heads with the offset intake rocker arm.

The 340 was given a 2.02 intake valve until '73 where it was reduced to a 1.88. All 360 heads have a 1.88 valve.
273 - 318 heads have smaller valves.

Get the casting numbers off the head and or the letter cast into them next to the spark plug holes. Not all heads have a letter.
Casting numbers are located under the head where the 2 intake runners meet.

Stock rebuilt heads are capable of 400 hp, but the manor in which you make 400 hp with stock heads may not be to your likeing. Stock ports and a sizeable street cam can make 360 hp without a problem. Another 40 hp should require a bit more cam.

I take this from example of the old MoPar crate engines. The "Comando" 360 engines came in 2 flavors, 300 and 360 HP. The 360 HP engine was a rebuilt bottom end @ (IIRC) 10-1 ratio, a M1 single plane intake, a Purple 284/.484 cam with stock heads w/2.02 intake valves.

MoPar suggested the rest of this engine parts as followed;

Holley 750
Large tube heads

The heads you mention, for $400 sounds like an OK deal, but, would need porting to achieve your goal. A bowl porting with a performance valve job & back cutting of the valves would be the perscription I'd order up.

Still a reasonable amount of money spent.

If they are freshly rebuilt and show new parts they might be worth $400. Does he have reciepts? But if they have been installed ever they aren't worth that unless they have a casting number that is rare and the cores are worth money.

The deck probably will be freshly machined, the valve seat area should look to have fresh marks if you look really really close. They should be totally clean. Should have new valve stem seals....

Like Rumble said Mopar never made a SB "police interceptor" engine so it's impossible to have police interceptor heads. Find out the casting number and post it. That'll tell us what they are. If their a good casting and rebuilt right they are worth $400

I have to mention the E-58 code 360 and the E48 code 318.Both were hd 4bbl engines. The E 48 engine can be found in many diplomat and fury cop cars from the 80's era.The E 58 came in the lil red express truck and was also available in some cop cars of that era.

There were also some crate engines put in diplomats for the florida DEA. These cars could top out at 148 mph.

I have a E-58 / 360 engine on my garage floor now. There nothing specail, just a cam and double roller chain w/a windage tray.

This engine could top out very high as well if you gave it a 2.45 rear and tall tires.

Isn't "Police Interceptor" a registered trademark of the Ford Motor Co.?

The police (E-58 ) heads were typical 360 heads with 1.88/1.60 valves. If these heads are bolt on and run ready, they are worth about $400. If they need rebuilt, you'll have at least that much again in them to make them right. It's not hard to get $1000 tied up in a set of heads, making some brand new heads seem a little less expensive considering what you end up with.

Would it be better spending the $400 getting these heads if indeed they are a fresh rebuilt or get the RHS heads?

The RHS heads are much better IMO but they'll cost more of course. They out flow the stock 360 heads by a bunch plus have smaller chambers so it'll raise the compression. Performance wise you'd be way ahead with a set of RHS heads IMO.

Hey you guys aware the police intercepter had HD rocker arms and shafts, confirmed it in late 70's with mopar parts depot and factory, used them on a 340 rebuild with X heads and max lift crane hydraulic cam at that time.

Correct, Dodge had the "Pursuit" (8-cyl) and the "Patrol" (6-cyl), at least in 1969, no ida how long they continued these names or what the Plymouths were called.

To correct the E58 in the little red express statement. It has been wrongfully stated for a long time. A little red express used a modified version of the E58 called the EH1.

Because of a loophole in the emissions regulations the 1978 Dodge Lil' Red Express Truck's did not have catalytic converters, what the Lil' Red Express did have was a special High Performance 360 C.I. 4-barrel small block engine code (EH1) which was a modified version of the 360 police engine (E58) producing 225 net horsepower @ 3800 RPM. The package also included Hemi style mufflers with a crossover pipe breathing through 2 chrome stacks located behind the cab, a special 727 transmission and 3.55:1 rear gearing.

Stock unported 2.02 heads in my '71 all steel street/strip 340 10:1 Cuda, 3595lbs with me >.590" solid cam>sorted 850DP>Strip Dom intake>1.3/4" race long tube hdrs, MSD6A, NGK's, 36 total in 1986 went...108mph@6200rpm trap = 376fwhp....your results may vary.

If the OP's aforementioned heads have 2.02 valves, and are in good usable shape, then they would be a decent deal. DO as RF360 says, get the casting #, post a few pix here, and measure the valve diameters directly yourself; the seller may be a fellow (you would have a better idea) but may be a BS artist working in his true medium.

If 'twer me, I'd pull a couple of springs & valves. Then you can wiggle the valves in the guides and get some idea of the general condition of wear, and look at seats, seals, etc. Exhaust valve guides tend to wear faster, but I'd pull 1 of each type (in and ex) on each head.

And of course, they can be cracked somewhere, so you'll never know that until they are pressure tested.

You FORGOT to mention that it was also the fastest production vehicle made that year beating the Corvette. The former title holder...... Former!

"The special 360 police head was introduced in March of 1977. The "new" casting added more water jacket holes in the lower edge (spark plug side) of the cylinder head. These extra holes are for sand removal only. They do not affect water flow or cooling. For identification purposes , the older police heads had 4 D-shaped holes while the newer heads have 9 triangular-shaped holes. The new head uses a new production gasket (PN: 4027329). This gasket can be used with the older heads but the older gaskets cannot be used on the newer heads." Quote Larry Shepard: How To Hot Rod Small Block Mopar Engines

I was just trying to clarify that the e58 was not used and the eh1 engine was for the little red express.

Hopefully after 8 years he found a set of heads for his motor.

I know I'm late to the party, but weren't those special police heads the Mopar Performance W2 heads. Had a friend with a Lil' Red Express Truck's with a 360 with W2 heads from the factory. Now that motor would hall ***!!!!!

No you didn't. The Little Red trucks never came with W2s. Never. They were rumored that they were going to get them, but they never did.
