Steering Pump ID Help......

According to all the sources out there at parts suppliers, there were 2 different power steering pumps installed in a 1967 Barracuda with a 273......

A Chrysler, and a Saginaw.

NO ONE can tell us the difference or how to ID the pumps for a seal kit.....NO ONE so far......and there are no pumps available for this car between here and outer Madagascar.........

Can any of you'se guys tell us how to positively ID the pump that's in the car?

According to my 69 FSM, the 2 pumps are called the .94 and 1.06 pump. I think the .94 pump is a Saginaw and the other is a Federal. The .94 pump can be identified by the long oval shapoe of the filler nexk and the drive pulley secured to the drives shaft with a large nut. The 1.06 can be identifed by it having a short round filler tube and also having a 3/8 inch threaded hole in the pulley end of the driveshaft. Hope this helps

You can get a core and buy through Rockauto and Cardone will rebuild it for about $60.00.

Actually Rockauto is showing a pump that you can buy outright.

Yours looks just like mine. they look just like a federal, BUT, come to find out it is a trw Thompson. After getting the wrong kits twice I went to a hydraulic repair shop and matched the big resevore O ring and the flat ring that seals the back, where the mount bolt goes through. Also noticed that a reman company or P.O. chucked the pump in a vise and buggered up the sealing area. Filed the burr down, installed these 2 new rings and no leaky8) If your pump is just leaking this may be your cure also.
 
OK........Did your kit say it was for a "Chrysler" pump?? Any of the kits?

The only seal kits I can find in existence are the Saginaw, and a Chrysler. No others.

Have`nt heard of a chrysler pump. Like I said, I give up after ordering 2 kits from 2 different napa`s. just a link to show that the thompson TRW did exist , Is it original?? if you guess yes order a kit for that year and cross fingers.

The pump in the pic appears to be a Thompson/TRW item. Federal and Thompson pumps are interchangeable on the same brackets (though you have to check pulley alignment; there are multiple different pulleys for each pump); Saginaw pumps take different brackets. The early Saginaw pump has an oval filler neck and a scalloped plastic combination cap and dipstick. The late Saginaw pump has a "ham can" shaped reservoir rather than a round section housing the actual pump at the bottom of a filler neck, and still uses the scalloped plastic combination cap and dipstick.

Cardone = thrown-together garbage. You can get a properly rebuilt pump, or a seal kit for any of the pumps, from Steer & Gear.
 
Please forgive this minor hijack, but does anyone know which pump would have come on a 1968 dart with a 340, since I need to get one?

I think it varies between the two depending on what options you have.

Airconditioning 68 340 and 318 I'm pretty confident all get the Federal. From the original poster's picture, it look like the lower pulley set is from an A/C car. So if his car was A/C I bet it had Federal pump originally. My 68 318 Dart with A/C had a federal pump. Until I ditched it for a Saginaw pump.

The non a/c cars usually depend on the gear ratio.

I've seen an unrestored green 68 340 notchback with a Saginaw in a magazine. You'd have to find original cars.

My 68 340 auto 3.23 sure grip had a saginaw pump. I is a std bore motor and was never rebuilt. BUT, I'm pretty sure the motor has been out and it has a replacement left side exhaust. Not an unrestored car.

BTW, the saginaw is a much better pump between the two. For longevity and operation.

But for applications in which both pumps were used, there are components listed for every conceivable combination (with/without air conditioning, etc.) for both pumps -- and there's no indication that rear axle gear ratio entered the equation.

I prefer the TRW and Federal pumps, myself -- they've tended to be quieter and less troublesome, with less "pump catch" (ability to get "ahead" of the pump and run out of steering assist when spinning the wheel fast).

Sorry, didn't see it was a 1967 Barracuda.

Then maybe it's later car that change the pumps per gear ratio. I know 70-71 E-bodies and A-bodies are like that with gear ratio taking in effect.

I've had the exact opposite experiance.

The TRW and Federal pumps catch and can't keep up when used above typical use. John Sandburg and Mitch Lelito have been autocrossing their AAR and T/A since the early 70's. Since those are 70 E-bodies with 3.55 or higher gears all AAR and T/A with power steering had Federal pump. Well John and Mitch always had problems with the power steering not keeping up.

Once they switched to a Saginaw pump, they never have had a problem since.

I had a Federal pump on my 68 Dart. It would catch when I was doing very quick parking lot or U-turn type manuevers. I switched it to a Saginaw, no problem since.

I went through my Saginaw pump on my 340 68 Barracuda in 1994 with just a reseal kit. Been running it every since without flaw. I called Steer and Geat back then and they said for autocross use I should drill out the rear oriface IIRC, 1/64" size larger. Don't have my notes handy from 15 years ago.
