WTB useable A body spare tire well section.

I've got a 74 Duster that needs the spare tire well replaced. Ordering a patch panel would be easy, but dang they're $200-$300 after shipping! I thought I might go out to the junk yard and find a spare tire well to cut out of something. Has anyone scavenged a spare tire well from something else...

1970-1975 had a carrier bearing that had a smaller O.D. than the 1976-1996 8.25. the housing is the same, but there is a carrier break at 2.71 and numerically higher.

I think the only way you would know is if you measured the O.D. for the races on the carrier bearings

Well I think I have the 8.25 about as good as I can get it considering it's a combination of used parts from two different vehicles/decades both from before I was born, haha. Backlash is set at .008, and everything is torqued. It turns really smooth and the pattern is decent. Someone smarter...

Unless you want to reweld the spring perches and have to deal with getting the rearend centered, pinion angle, etc. I would just look for an A-body differential housing. The 7.25" will last until you find something as long as you dont beat on it too much. If you do want to weld on spring...

I totally see what you're saying. The bores for the carrier bearings are a different outside diameter. So although you can use a later carrier in an earlier housing, you need to use the appropriate bearings/races to marry the two, so I think we are in agreement there regarding the bearing O.D...
