Cheap spare tire well replacement ideas

I've got a 74 Duster that needs the spare tire well replaced. Ordering a patch panel would be easy, but dang they're $200-$300 after shipping! I thought I might go out to the junk yard and find a spare tire well to cut out of something. Has anyone scavenged a spare tire well from something else...

What year 8.25 diff / need help ID

1970-1975 had a carrier bearing that had a smaller O.D. than the 1976-1996 8.25. the housing is the same, but there is a carrier break at 2.71 and numerically higher.

What year 8.25 diff / need help ID

I think the only way you would know is if you measured the O.D. for the races on the carrier bearings

    8.25 carrier swap journey! 2.45s to 3.55s!

Well I think I have the 8.25 about as good as I can get it considering it's a combination of used parts from two different vehicles/decades both from before I was born, haha. Backlash is set at .008, and everything is torqued. It turns really smooth and the pattern is decent. Someone smarter...

    8.25 carrier swap journey! 2.45s to 3.55s!

Got some more work done on it. The 1974 correct bearings go right on the 1995 carrier and it all fits nicely in the housing. The tone ring clears with no issue. I think I got it set up pretty close but I'm going to take another look at it tomorrow before I torque everything down. I plan to...

    8.25 carrier swap journey! 2.45s to 3.55s!

There's been a lot of confusing information about carrier swaps in 8.25 diff housings so I figured I would share my journey for anyone in the future who is looking for information. A couple weeks ago I snagged an 8.25 A-body differential from a 74 Swinger with an unknown gear ratio. After I...

Call around to some Jeep/4x4 shops. They usually rebuild a lot of diffs and are more knowledgeable than the average shop.

[FOR SALE] 3.55 gear set for 7.25 rearend

I pulled this carrier, ring, and pinion from an 88 Dodge Dakota with a 7.25 diff. 3.55 open gear set, complete carrier. Gears are in great shape, truck was low miles. I was going to try these in my 74 duster (7.25" BBP) but am going another route. It's YOUR responsibility to determine if these...

    Rear end mounting question

Unless you want to reweld the spring perches and have to deal with getting the rearend centered, pinion angle, etc. I would just look for an A-body differential housing. The 7.25" will last until you find something as long as you dont beat on it too much. If you do want to weld on spring...

    Lokar Kickdown adjustment

Sounds like yours was like mine at first. If you stayed in the throttle you'd have to let off for the trans to shift. I tried adjusting the cable a couple different ways, looser, tighter, etc. and it didnt really seem to make a difference until I put a really light return spring on the lever on...

Wanted to confirm some information on the 8 1/4 rear end (carrier swap)!

I agree with you 100%. That's why I plan to pull the parts myself so i know exactly what they came out of and why im trying to do so much research beforehand. Ive researched so much about 8.25's im about sick of them, lol

Wanted to confirm some information on the 8 1/4 rear end (carrier swap)!

I totally see what you're saying. The bores for the carrier bearings are a different outside diameter. So although you can use a later carrier in an earlier housing, you need to use the appropriate bearings/races to marry the two, so I think we are in agreement there regarding the bearing O.D...

Correct, but that doesn't change the housing.
