After the oven cleaner....Wipe it down with a good paint prep product, pre-kleeno, metal prep etc...when the wiping towels are not black anymore and wipe off clean you're ready to paint. Most of the engine specific sprays are good nowadays....VHT, plasti-kote etc

Agree, don't cut the pillars if ya can avoid it. If its too damaged and ya got to cut the whole thing off, brace up the glass openings all the way around.
