Do you have the 68-72 A-body roller bearing idler arms back in stock?

Stripped aluminum planetary gear would be my guess. Years ago I had to drive home backwards because of that (college years, too broke for a tow). Good luck with the repair, I hope it's not that and is a simple fix.

I ran into this same thing when putting an OD 833 behind my 318 in the late 90's. I didn't have access to other bearings retainers and chose to go the "turn down" route too. Word of caution, my shop wasn't able to take it all off of the outside of the bearing retainer because it would get into...

I can't thank you enough! I've been looking for something larger than the craft size for body plugs, grommets, interior parts, etc. that is still see-thru. It looks like $10 for 2-packs around me, perfect!
