NE1 read it?,i just did,1970 book by dee brown, very interesting reading about how we SCREWED the indians from 1860-1890 out of their land, hunted them down and killed them by the hundreds, men, women, children, horses also, how the US govt herded them on to reservations like cattle, with nothing to live on,made treatys L&R and broke them all as the whites moved out west for land and gold & silver, makes me sick to turn the pages and read on,i cant believe what us whites did to these people who just wanted to live on THEIR land and hunt buffalo for food, makes me think of Nazi Germany getting rid of the Jews, were no better, shame on the USA!!

Yep, 'relocating' the Indians was beyond shameful. The government just wanted them gone, so white people wouldn't have to co-exist with Indians.

yeah, read it some time back, its pretty hard reading.
other related good reads are "My Friend The Indian" by james mclaughlin, and "The Indian Interviews" by eli ricker.
sometimes i just have to stop reading for awhile, the stories are tragic and part of my heritage.

Have you also read about the second Wounded Knee in 1973?

Russell Means who was in charge of AIM ( American Indian Movement ) back in 1973 and also started his acting career 20 years later playing Chingachgook in Last of the Mohecans. I met Russell around 1976 or 7

Read up on it by searching the net

yes we did,the book covers this period, the most recorded time about it

Just read a book about the war of 1812 called 1812 war that forged a nation. Was a good read. Was suprised to see a lot on indians in the book.

It was not just the indians we wanted gone so we could have there land. One of the reasons for the war of 1812 was so we could take canada from England. We wanted Spain and france gone and the Mexican American war was nothing more than a land grab. Not that I am saying it was right. Just the way it was.

Of course I wasnt alive then but it does make me hang my head in shame. Nothing OUR goverment does suprises me in the least.

in the back of the book is a pic of an old indian, under it it says,"they made us many promises, more than i can remember, but they never kept but one, they promised to take our land, and they took it" how sad

Stories like that are why I alway say if you aren't getting a casino check you have got nothing to complain about when it comes to immigration.

I don't look into the past and I have never met any of my Grandfathers.
My grandmother told me stories about my family dressing up and pose as French men to get a job... Toledo scale company I think it was, But no one hired Indian men back then
I am thankful for the freedom that our four fathers gave me to enjoy the land and raise my young, I will not complain of these things becouse my own sweet and tear's help feed the world in my day
I have more then what I have ever prayed for when I was a young man
When I moved out of the labor camp's, I knew more about people by the time I was 16 then most men have by 30.
History is what it is and I don't know much about it, But learn more and more everyday.

To be fair, the Indians were killing, kidnapping, raping, and pillaging each other long before the white man came. The history of the world is about conquest. I'm not going to feel guilt for things that happened in the past.....just about what we do now.

Good point.. of course, the natives were "savages" while us white guys were supposed to be "civilized".. It's in our very nature as primates, though- even chimpanzees and gorillas engage in "politics" within their own societies, often with bloody results.

A couple more books to get aggravated by: A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn, and Fatal Shore (about the, uh, "settling" of Australia) by Robert Hughes.

That's why we all need to feel white guilt and vote for people like oblunder who was supposed to be the savior of the world and end racism, division, and government corruption as we know it but it seems it was all lies as he want's a ruling class, division of classes based on race so he can have someone to blame for the worlds problems so he can get them votes and shove his "real" agendas down our throats........ sorry folks, it ain't gonna work.

You can say this country has been hijacked by radicals, just no killing yet, but they sure are puposely killing the economy and the free market system, while opening the doors for their muslim brothers who just attacked us...........so now our tax dollars are paying to send the controversial (ground zero) Imam to the middle east to supposedly talk to the mullahs about tolerance, yeah right, more like he's going to go over there and say "obama set the stage for our conquest of the american infidels."

Your mosque at ground zero is the next "conquest" of America if you don't already know it.....open those eyes.

There was many wars going on before people came to ower country
There was many tribes here in the south and mid south all the way to east and west cost growing, and you stayed in your area for food supply :happy10: exetra and had cities built :read2: I do believe they had Mammoth Springs Arkansas and was taken over :read2:
No blame no guilt here, It's just history, not my strongest point :-D

I read this twice and so far have failed to find anything even remotely connected to the massacre at wounded knee. Am I missing something?

Years ago I had the chance to visit Crazy Horse Mountain in South Dakota and the following quote was emblazened high upon a wall...... it has stuck with me since.

"They made us many promises, more than I can remember, but they never kept but one; they promised to take our land, and they took it."

I am actually part Cherokee and have visited a few reservations in different states. I know this won't go over very well here, but I am going to speak my mind. I have a hard time feeling sorry for someone who can't put their boots on every morning and go to work and pay their taxes like the rest of us. I admit that we did take their land and relocate them, but what is done is done. I compare this to slavery and I am getting sick of hearing about this ****. I never killed an indian or owned a slave. No simpathy from me.

I have seen many reservation houses with every window broken out and the heater running full blast, because someone it too lazy to fix the windows or doesn't care because they don't pay the electric bill or pay for the house. It is a cycle just like other societies in this country. These people get a roof over their heads and a check once a month from uncle sam and you and I pay the bill. Waaaaa. Rant over.

I agree with your point of view Badart...to a point.
its a valid argument that some indians just don't try when they have opportunities to make their lives better. However the vast majority of indians on reservations aren't there by choice. many were put on land that isn't productive in areas that hold no promise of economic relief, i.e jobs.
these people were beaten down and put away wet with pretty much zero future to strive for.
I have over 150 acres of ceded land in n. dakota that the dept. of interior leases out "for me", i suppose because they don't think i'm smart enough to manage the property myself. my take in this colossal scam is less that a grand per year.
you see, the government wants to keep the indians right where they are, where they are managable.

fwiw, i'm from sioux nation, Standing Rock agency
look up Cobell v. Salazar and see how we are still being screwed.
thanks for listening

An unlikely thread for a bunch of gear heads. But hey...since you guys started it. If your interested there's a uniquie book by a calvary officer written in the 1850s about the Apache. Its called "My Life Among the Apache" by John Cremony. You can download the book on-line at http://www.archive.org/details/lifeamongapaches00cremrich
