is there really no replacement for displacement?...

Slants are great engines. They can be build to haul some butt, too. they can economical while doin it if the parts are matched right. I'm gittin ready to find out forst hand cause I'm fixin to build one myself. I've always pulled um out in favor of a V8, but I never have bashed on um and never will. So yall hush up the bashin. Cause slants are Mopar brethern you know?

Yea, don't get me started......

Not accordding to the slew of hate mail I got. Your dead wrong and echo alot of what I had said. So, your wrong, not by me, but by thopse you know over at the oether forum. In fact, I have been told , I'm dead stupid, dumb and a hord of explictits and was also given exacting directions on how to go crew myself and to hell.

Also, according to them, some of them drive 11 second daily drivers.

W-W-W-w-w-w-w-w-w_what ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not according to the /6 crew, Again, like me, your dead wrong and the above parragraph. (OH HOW DROLE!)

I should have save the E-mails posts and PM's.

I better run and duck again before the posting war starts up again. The zelots and trolls are sure to reappear.

IMO, do what ever you want with the car and just have fun with it. Otherwise, IMO, I don't see the purpose of owning a old car if it isn't fun.
What ever gets your motor running!

I don't really know what to say about that other than an 11 second daily driver slant is bullshit, whoever told you that. Make sure you know who your talkin' to cause there is a lot of guys over there who don't know what they're talking about, like wise, there is a lot of guys over there who do know what they're talkin' about. Can I join you in the bunker by the way, I don't want to be caught in it either. Indeed above all, have fun with your car. Build your car the way you want it, that's why it's your car.

11 second daily driver... maybe in the 1/8 mile! :thebirdm:

When I changed my exhaust and put a good 390 on my 170/ it run's much better. hills don't bother it and she likes 65 and 70 mph now :happy10:
Bone stock 170/ 2 to 1 exhaust 2'' to the tail shaft then 2 1/4 with a very quit muffler for some back pressure and run's a 12.07 1/8 mile and my daily driver getting 27 mpg on the hwy, switching to 14'' and removed the 13'' helped I am sure
I know it is no power house but it sure eat's up the first 60' for a granny numbers matching A body, I know this engine will give me many great miles and it will always have one in it, I think 8) :happy10: Just had to share and yes =P~ you can not here it running down the road :happy10: Nice and quite and light.
That's a really cool air box setup Memike. Is that aftermarket or good ole' junk yard "enginuity." I've been considering trying something like that on my 225's one barrel, only I wanted to do a ram air setup behing the grill.

Slants are great engines for your daily driver, but for a young gun trying to compete with todays ricers,I,d say go with a roller 360 and eat rice.:snakeman:

I must say though, slants do have their limits. Naturally aspirated your usually running mid 13's to low 14's. On the other hand, I've seen some forced induction setups do mid to low 9's. Juice also another great way to make power, although it is risky if not done correctly.
Never in my 47 years have I seen an natural aspirated slant 6 run 13,s or 14,s?With some sort of power adder yes they can be a mean little engine, but will cost $$,and time on headwork,cam,exhaust,intake/carb.Anyway,have fun working/learning on your car.8)

I purchased my 68 Barracuda in 97 and worked on it to mid 00 when I put it back on the road.

It went on the road with the original \6 and an A833OD 4spd tranny and 3.23 gears. I drove it that way (making other changes along the way) until Jul 05 when I swapped in a 360 with the same A833OD and 3.55 gears. I figure the \6 built the way I had it was making around 190 HP and got 19-20 mpg around town and 22-23 on the hiway. The 360 is making around 370 HP and gets 16.5-17.5 mpg around town and 21-22 mpg on the hiway.

I drive the car between 7k and 9k miles per year and have not regretted swapping in the 360 for a second. Yes a \6 with headers and a 4bbl looks cool but it doesn't really perform like a muscle car and it doesn't sound cool when talking to someone about the car, all they hear is \6. The 360 on the other hand is fast and doesn't really give up much in the way of economy and i don't have to make excuses for having a 6 cylinder.

This is the way the car looked with the \6;

And this is the way it looks with the 360;

I don't think you could get the \6 to the 370 HP and 400+ ft-lb range for the same cost as building a 360 and installing it.

My only goal is to build one with more power than stock, have a strong lope and sound good and be a reliable daily driver. It'llget way better mileage than a 360, too. Somebody close to or in Georgia got an early 2 door a body for cheap?

Like so many have said, depends on what you are going for. When I first got my 71 Swinger, I wanted a hot rod that not everyone had. It had the /6 that was not running. I went out and got a 360 and trans from a local yard. Before I pulled the / I wanted to get it running so I could sell it easier. After I got it running and started to drive it around I really liked the /. Afterall I wanted something different and the / fit the bill. I was\am not going for a race car. So I sold the 360 and used that money to start on the build up of the / and car. Now its got an Offy 4bbl intake, 390 Holley, header and a 8 1/4 sure grip rear with 3.23 gears. I now have a spare motor and when funds are ready I plan to have the head work done and slightly bigger cam for a little more fun. Although its not ready for any show I have taken it to a few and some cruise ins, and I get a lot of people suprised by the /. So it gets looks and makes em wonder what they don't see in the car.
If you wanna hot rod go with the V8. If you want it different keep /6.

I LOVE the angry hornet sound of a hot /6. Then again a hot big block or small block really turns my crank..AHHH help me!

Thank you /6 Matt :happy10: That is a 93 4.0 jeep breather box and helps keep that 200 degree air out of my /6
My system has been great and flawless, she hit's the scales at 2.700lb's with spare, tools and cooler and give me a nice humble quit ride.
Bone stock 170 that will pull of a 12.07 1/8 mile is no way a fast car but it sure has no problem getting out of it's own way.
If I want a 8.0 1/8 mile driver I would move up to a nice new roller 360 small block =P~ But as of know she will do all I want her to do, unlike when I had the single carb and single 1 7/8'' factory exhaust it had when I picked her up.
Tune it and do the normal service they call for and I should be driving her fore many mile's of joy. It did feel good to pull 3 length's on a chebby truck out of the hole when I ran her at George Rays he ran a 10.10 with his V8 driver but I was there and was tickled that 170 ci against a 350 ci 8)
If I had the $$$$ I would have a mild 360 and a 904 auto pushing a 8 1/4 rear end, less is more some time's and fun running a full 1/4 mile =P~

I have a 70 Duster with 24,000 original miles, a slant and a 3 speed and I love that car! Its really fun to drive but....................When I need to scare the living daylights out of myself I drive this...............

theres something about loosing your ball sack for ten seconds and then finding them again that makes me smile............

I say build what you like.....I have a 440 4speed 70 Runner, a 360 4 speed 67 Barracuda, and a slant 6- 62 Valiant drag car....nature-ly asperated....elderbrock 4 bbl. Runs 12.90's.Its got alot of cool stuff done to it....but it does like to kill shebys at the tracks.

hi FABO, i've had my '70 swinger for almost a year now and she's absolutely wonderful. But she's only got the stock (yet extremely clean) 225 /6. i've always driven faster cars, and although the low end torque is nice, the high end torque simply doesn't exist. She's a brilliant engine, (she lasted 400 miles and back upto lake shasta a few weeks ago) but i really need to get some more power. Is it worth me getting a 2 barrel carb, header exhausts etc (and possibly even a turbocharger) or is it best just to find a 340 to throw in? i'm in no great rush, but if anyone has any opinion on the matter, that'd be great - thanks

The easiest thing to do would be to do a leak down test on the 225, if all is under 10%, You can then remove the head, have a performance valve job done with larger valves installed and blended in, mill the head .080-.100 and stick a 'mild' cam in it with some ford 370 springs or olds, both are common of the shelf 'cheapy' springs that work great- done this before.
Then run a 3.23 3.55 gear. done

Or if you can afford a lil more...also stick a holley 350cfm 2brl with super six intake and clifford header and 2200 stall.
..and later try a 4 brl with clifford intake, but know the cam will hold the potential of that addition back.
It'll be quick and cruise the hyw's 80mph with plenty of passing power.
jma.

and... the slants running 11.96 around these parts...be also running 12.5 comp &.600'ish lift , slants head seal hates that much pressure=pop!
There's also Buick turbo swap onto the slant that works decent I hear, according to a guy I know in venice beach..

I ran a 11.546 at 113.31 in Eureka last weekend,ALL MOTOR.12.5 compression with the same head gasket I put in over 80 runs ago. Will bee running this comming weekend at the mopar race in Sacremento.Trying to lower my record in the B/gas class.2350lbs to 2700 lbs.My car weighs 2380 with me in it.NOT a street car.Guzzi Mark
