The rubber plug covers the hole where the clutch linkage comes through the firewall on a manual trans car, automatics got the plug.

It is awesome, isn't it? Thanks for the knowledge....I assumed the plug had something to do with the auto vs. manual set-up. but just didn't know what....Does it get an open grommet or something else before the linkage goes through?
 
I think if it's manual the same size plug gets used but it has a factory stamped hole in it at an angle. Kind of looks like a boot.
