i have a 65 formula s cuda and it has a 360 small block for a 76 duster now what my problem is as i found out that the magnetic pick up and the star bit are touching....which they shouldnt if i am correct...now if i buy a new star bit and magnetic pick up will that fix my problem of giving me park? as of now i will now get spark unless the star bit and the magnetic pick up touch and it will touch once and then it will kick back the pickup to were i get no spark. help me out on this weird problem thanks again

Are you talking about the pickup in the distributor? If so, the gap is adjustable. You need a brass feeler gauge to do it so you don't get confused by the pull of the magnet. Don't know what the spec is on the gap though. Maybe around .016" to .018"?

In my Factory 1978 Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge service manual it says set it @ .006" then recheck it and it could be as loose as .008" but not bigger then .008"

what the problem i can set the pick up that is in the distributor right but i wont get spark only way i will get spark is if the star bit touches the pick up which that is not right now i was wondering if by any chance that i did buy a new pick up and star bit would that fix my problem

With an ohmmeter the pick-up should have between 150 ohms. to 900 ohms. is what the factory service manual says.

I had this problem with my Duster once, what a pain.I set the gap correctly and still nothing until I found a hole in my distributor cap.If setting the gap correctly does no good,You might have a bad pickup.Check the control module and coil also, just in case:-D

the ohmn meter says my pick up is at 300 ohmns i put it back in set it up right and nothing :angry7: but the coil is good im getting good spark from the coil but i also noticed that inside the distributor it wobbles a little bit so that also could be a problem in itself

Back when I was in auto mechanics class in 1974 they told us that Chrysler distributors were bad about wearing out the bushings in them, leading to slop in the gap settings. Still a problem?

the distributor and the rotor button is brand new and i still set it right and no spark but if i test the coil i get spark but like i said before it seems like the inside of the distributor is wobbling a little bit but ill buy a new pick up and star bit and try it again to see whats up with this thing.

Not sure what you mean by wobbly. Does that mean you can move the reluctor back and forth? If it's worn like that why don't you see about getting a rebuilt distributor? You said you were going to replace the pick-up again anyway.

Do you have another ECU you can borrow to see if yours is bad?

Take an 8X11 piece of printer paper and fold it in half. Stick it between the pickup and reluctor and adjust so there's a LIGHT drag against the paper. DONE.

You said that it is a new distributor?? But it wobbles?? If its new and wobbles take it back, that I think is where the problem is. You bushings are $hit by the sounds of it.

no i dont nothingbutdarts and yes that is wat i mean the regulator moves back and forth when it is rotating plus its a new distributor CAP and rotor button its the stock distributor. sorry i thought i typed in the cap part there lol

Not sure here, is it a new distributor?

If it's not you might try and get a rebuilt since it's so loose.
