my 273 V8 is making this clicking noise when I start it up. Sounds like it's coming from the back of the engine bay, somewhere near the carb, but definitely sounds like it's coming from inside the engine. Not super experienced but just curious what it could be. I'll be taking it to my mechanic tomorrow to have him check it out, just wondering what you guys think it could be.

probably just need the valves adjusted. Next time you fire it up listen near the valve cover.

The Flux Capacitor needs tightening.

the heat riser in the exhaust manifold and lots of other possibilties. Timing chain slaping the inside of the cover is another. Use a long tube to pinpoint the source. Transmission funnel works for me. Good luck

These motors have a solid lift cam. Have your valves adjusted by someone who has done it before. To tight you will cause damage. Loose is just noisy.

Don't worry, probably one of the aforementioned areas....as you noticed, a couple suggestions were made for comic effect, since you are a noobie but that means they like you.

Yeah my uncle and brother both think it is valves. Uncle listened to it in person, brother just heard my describe it. I'm going to take it by his house later, have him listen to it. If he doesn't figure it out then I'll take it to my actual mechanic. Thanks a lot though everyone. And I replaced the flux capacitor on saturday, so it's A ok.

so my uncle doesn't think it's the valves, just from the noise and how smoothly the car is still running. He thinks it's the lifters I believe he said. Although I have a new problem since now the car isn't starting at all.. gonna have to try and figure out what that problem is.

He's talking about the same thing, your 273 has solid lifters which make noise when the valve lash isn't correct. Just get some feeler gauges and look for some articles on setting valve lash for a solid cam. If you had a hydraulic cam and it was making similar noise the only fix would be to get a new lifter, as factory Mopar hydraulic valvetrain setups aren't adjustable (the hydraulic mechanism in the lifter adjusts by itself).

So new piece to the story. I started the car up today, drove it around for maybe 45 seconds around the block, and the clicking went away. Hasn't made the noise since. I'm wondering if maybe something was sticking, and the car just needed to warm up, circulate the oil all the way around until what was making the noise got unstuck? Would that be a possibility?
