rat or not to rat

So I think this is what he was talking about doing. What would you guys call this?

Lower it, chop it, do something with the protruding front bumper, ditch the red wheels and you might be on to something...

i wouldnt consider my car a rat rod, just a solid color until the bodywork is done. the black looks alot better than when i bought it and it was primered here and there.i do like my cars looks, but it is only temporary until i can put a proper paintjob on it. its your car ,so go for the look that you want, just do it safely.

if i paint my my 92 dodge shadow flat black is it a ratrod lol

ok im not up to date on the trems but im NOT going to paint the chromeim not going to chop it and no red wheels so if murdered out is painting the chrome then for get it i just got good head light rings and grill and the bupers are way to good to paint and i think it will be running dog dish not sure on the ones i want yet u mite help me on that i mite shave the back door handle not the tail gate handle and i mite shave the drip rales

in a way uguys are makeing this car lol

AWWW Crap, come on guys this is...WAS the only forum that I'm part of where I don't...DIDN'T have to worry about seeing that stupid rat rod debate pop up.:angry7:

I stopped going to all mopar shows because I got tired of seeing the same few types of cars over and over again, I stopped going to Goodguys because I got tired of seeing the same oldsters with their dumb straw fedoras and small block chevies crammed into all the 90's style trailer queens and I'm almost ready to stop going to "rat rod" shows until all the dillrods with their pant cuffs rolled up and 2' tall pompadours move onto the next thing. There is almost nothing left!

OOOHHHHH I GOT IT!!!! Lets argue about who's dart is more traditional!!!!:bootysha:

PS....it's got bags......yes even I broke the cardinal rule and used new suspension technology.

My bad.

Mop

Bags aren't new, they have been used in cars since the 30's so you will still be allowed on the HAMB... I'm sorry.

Theres alot of us that can relate to the original rat rodders. My Duster for instance is a "build as I drive it" sort of thing.Whenever my budget allows it,I get a part for it.Its not in flat black with the lower quarter rust holes because I like it that way,I hate it I cant wait to start on the body work and throw some nice shiny paint on it and it will look like a diffent car,but not having a garage I know it will pretty much sit until spring when I plan on starting the body work.Im not at all embarrased by the way it looks ,right now,I give a damn how it looks.I care more about how she runs and stops and handles.Once I get that taken care of,you bet she is going to be pretty.I have plans to give her a makeover this summer

That is pretty much how I feel. While money is always an issue, for me it's TIME!!!! I just can't make the time right now. But I do have to get around. I'm putting 200 - 300 miles per week on mine, and while I want it to look better, I don't want to take it off the road while I work on it a few hours per week. I'm going to keep driving it, and maintaining the important stuff. When I get some solid time, and can devote 15 to 20 hours per week on it, then I'll make it pretty. My sig pic shows the "good" side of my Duster. Here is the other:

Oh, and FWIW, here is my "rod." Yes it's on air, and yes it rolls and steers at that height. The control arm angles (at road height) are suprisingly close to stock (2.5" drop splndles, 2" framehead drop, and shorter tires). Therefore it's as safe as it can be with 145/65/15's (Smart Fortwo OE Continentals) up front and a four inch narrowed front track. I haven't done the airbags out back yet (time, time, time), so that is a 5" static drop.

I wouldn't cut off the drip rails...it's just looks goofy. Taking off the rear door handles looks silly...kinda like yeah it's got the rear doors....but don't look at 'em...I'll just hide them and people will think it's a 2 door. Stay with classic styling and not fad styling and if you decide to get rid of it or keep it for a long time you'll be happier and actually be able to sell in the future.
By the way the VW look pretty damn nice.

...By the way the VW look pretty damn nice.
Thanks! That was a project that got totally out of hand. The lessons I learned from that are in large part what is keeping my Duster on the road. I'll be picking up on the Beetle again this fall/winter, and hope to have it back on the road by spring.

I can only hope that poor excuse for a "truck" causes as much pain to passengers as it does to viewers.

To try and justify that as "what your grandparents or old timers did back in the day" only shows extreme ignorance to the hobby. Old timers didn't drive around in busted up ****, they didn't leave rust as some sort of a statement and they damn sure didn't go out of their way to make it look like ***. They had pride in their vehicles. Why do you think you still find farm trucks that take little work to get road worthy again? Because even when they beat them, they still took care of them. So many usable bodies have been ruined by this **** trend it makes me sick.

your Rat needs a 6" hair cut............ done... sweet piece did you pave your driveway yet?? 8)

Ha....I wish.

Business has been sloooow so all I can do is re-grade it with my old bobcat after each rain and drive really slow up and down it.

I still managed to get a chip on my QP last time I went down it...bahhhh.

Next year I'm gonna pave it......I hope.

Damn.....I guess I am gonna have to get a pompadour and some dark blue straight leg jeans. I'm gonna feel kinda gay rolling up the cuffs and t-shirt sleeves though.

Why can't I just be a lone wolf? My wife already considers me a dog.:-D

I am assuming you are talking about my truck.

First off...I don't think you have been around enough to know what the old timers did with their cars unless you know all of the old timers in the whole world. My dad and his buddies grew up real poor and in a real **** neighborhood in the industrial side of town. They didn't have money just ingenuity and scrap. Somehow they were able to piece together cars from scrap and make them safe enough to drive....yes they were rusty and crusty but that's what a jalopy is. Guess what? They drove the **** out of em then sold them to their even poorer friends.

Secondly my truck had spent the last 30 years sitting in a field rotting away. It would have never moved had I not saw the beauty in the patina that mother nature gave it. I feel that slapping a coat of bondo and primer over that beautiful finish would be sacraligous. Who am I to change what God and Mother earth did to this truck. Most people who encounter it LOVE IT. Only those without vision or appreciation for the sublime are scared.

Thirdly it is slightly uncomfortable but that's my mistake. I went for form over function on the seating arrangement. Easy fix.

So you my friend are the ignorant one...by having a closed minded opinion you have shown your true colors.

Get back to your four door and buff the paint and chrome till your arms fall off.......guess what? All the paint and chrome in the world will never make a 4 door look valiant good. Load it up with 3 old ladies and thats a different story.

G'day grandma.

Yea I admit that was a bit mean spirited......I finally had some coffee and now I am in a better mood.

Do what you want and build what you like and F-anyone who hates on you for doing so.......including me.:-D

Now lets move on to something completely different...............A man with two noses.

Man I'm sorry I missed this thread, it's amazing how spun up people will get over this stuff! I've mostly driven mopars that looked like "beaters" over the years... partly because it was all I could afford and they were cheap back then... But mainly because I love 'em that way. I still find one every so often... But I can certainly appreciate other cars that people insist on calling "fads".... Hey, wasn't "Hot Rodding" considered a "fad" at one point? I agree, build what the heck you want!

I'm sorry I didn't get to this sooner. Was out of town and didn't have internet access. So I murdered out 63 Dart 2 dr. The stainless headlight rings were toast so I straightened them and painted them. I did not use primer because it attracts moisture. I used semi gloss enamel with a top coat of Rustoleum textured paint. Does this make it a rat rod? No. Does this make it worse than your POS shiny trailer queen? No. Does it make it more popular than your shiny machine? Most of the time, yes. I am currently building a gasser replica out of a 49 Dodge pilot house. Why? because I want to do it. It will not be shiny. It will look like it just came out from behind the barn. Do I care that you won't like it? No. I'm building it because I want it. That is what everyone should do. And if you don't like the way someone did THEIR car or truck or whatever, shut your mouth and walk away. It's none of your business. Do that and I won't make fun of your POS. Fair enough?

wow it i didnt try to start a big fight lol but thats kind of what happened oldguy i like ur 63 and the way u think TexasDart ur right i did ask for ur opinions good or bad and i got some and momoparman glad u got coffee u got a little out of it lol and as far as 4 doors go ya there famly cars and i like them thay just have two more doors man if u look at it there are more 2 doors becas all the 4 doors have been parted out now dont get me truned around if i had the cash for a 2 door i would have one but if i had the cash to just play i would have a 64 4DOOR with a 426 4 speed what u think bout that lmao oh and to charlesskelter dude for real whats the point of makeing fun of his truck the man put the best he can in it im sure let me put it to ya this way ya u got ur point in that ratting is bad but some like it and u cant save them all so ya dont have to be a prick

It looks better in daylight, there is red pinstripe too and is much more raked than it looks. It's sitting on an incline and the bottom of the car is not rusty.
