Looking to get a new/different one. Leaning toward a 22.250 or a .17 Rem. Would like something that can reach out to maybe 400 yds and still have some killin on the other end. I'll put a variable scope on it in big power so i can see that far. Want a bolt action gun with a bull barrel and will adapt a bi-pod on the front. Your thoughts. I like the Ruger 77 but a Savage is an alright gun also. Right now i'm shooting a .17 HMR Savage with the acu trigger and a 3x9 and i hit what i shoot at. My longest shot was about 300 yds but it dont have it on the far out for killin. Dont tell anyone but i hunt deer with my .17 and nothing runs, walks, or crawls away when ya poke em behind the ear or in the eye. I call it sugically removing them from the herd. Would like a center fire cartridge also. Give me some feedback guys. I have another .17 HMR Savage and a Belgium .243 Browning Auto that i might do some trading on. I'd love to have a custom rifle but that's more than likly out of my budget. So is a Kimber. Maybe an Anshultz? Give me your thoughts guys....and gals.

You want to reach out and drill a coyote at 400 yards then take a look at the Winchester Mod 70 25-06. Its got the powder behind it of a 30-06 but uses a 25 caliber bullet. Goes like hell. I sight mine in at 3 inches high at 200 yards and she's dead nuts centered at 400 yards. Not a well know breed like the 22-250's but a lot deadlier IMO.

I am not am expert but seams like the 22-250 is less affected by cross winds on long shots. The 17 as fast and as light may be more prone to windage IMO.

Get you a 50 cal sniper rifle.

Smallblock I have owned .17 HMR, .17 Fireball, 220 Swift and .22-250, .223 and a .204. I can tell you that I love my Savage .22-250 You could even take down a whitetail easily with this caliber. 8) At 4,000 fps the .22-250 makes ground hogs and rock chucks literally explode and coyotes don't leave long blood trails. I have mine zero'd at 300 yards and shoot flat out to that. Here is what a 250 can do.

I would also look at the .204 caliber that is out there now.

x2 on the 25-06. i loved the one i had.ied shoot deer and coyote with it.

If you have to choose between the 22-250 or 17, the 250 hands down. Have you looked at Remington's 700 SPS Varmint with heavy barrel ?

I had a Ruger 77 in 6mm Rem. A special order but well worth it.The 6mm has a long neck for good bullet grip and ease of loading. Low recoil. I hit a rabid steel chicken at 440 yds.
.17 are a little harder to keep clean.

My Dad was a gun trader, and I spent a lot of time helping him. I have most of the above mentioned calibers. I have to admit my 2 favorites are the .220 Swift, and the .25-06. If you're wanting a varmit rifle that you can deer hunt with,I vote the .25-06. If you are wanting just a varmit rifle look at the .22-.250. As much as I like the Swift & the .204, I don't think they have enough over the .22-.250 to offset the price of ammo. Not claiming to be an expert, just my .02 worth.

My brother once had a Remington Model 700 chambered in 25-06 and had the barrel glass bedded, put a bipod on it and topped it with a nice Leupold Scope. That thing was a ground hogs worst nightmare! I'm a big fan of that cartridge as well as the 22-250.

This confirms what i have been thinking. The .17 ammo is expensive and not everyone has it here, not to mention the wind issue. The 250 is reasonable on ammo price and shoots good and flat/fast on out there. It will be a varmit gun only. Dont need a deer gun as i have plenty, clear up to a 7 mm mag if need be. I think i'll try and look for a Savage or a Ruger 77 to fill the bill. 25.06 has been a consideration but a little overkill for what i want it for and ammo is a little more spendy. Anyone live in prarie dog country? I can take a very large diet of that type of shooting. Thanks guys.

Ever think about a Tikka? http://www.tikka.fi/t3rifles.php
We have a couple of them chambered in .223, a t3 Stainless light and the Tactical one. Both are extremely accurate/consistent and have a crisp, light trigger pull.

Yup, but we call them gophers and they're all over this country. I go out to my brothers in laws farm and drive around the pastures in his beater truck and plunk them all day. Shoot an old long barrel .22 Browning pump repeater with a X4 rifle scope and long rifle mushrooms. That old iron is good out to 150 yards all day long. Last year I was shooting im up down in this coulee went through 3-400 rounds without moving the truck. Sure glad Ross supplies the bullets.

Done deal. I traded for a Savage Accu trigger 22.250 new in the box and i still need a scope for some 600 yd shots. What's your recommendations on the optics. Haven't shot the rifle yet but need the info on the optics so let me know your thoughts. The good part of this site is your guys know the ins and outs of what we need to know. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks

I have 2 savage rifles both bull barrels. One in .308 one in .300 win. mag. I'm a novice and have cheap scopes and I can put bullets wherever I want at will. One is 12bvss and other is 112fv I think. A better shooter with a better scope could do better than my pic. The 12bvss will do this all day long.

bottom left of pic is 3 bullet holes at 100 yards 180 grain.....about 1/2 MOA my vote is Savage.

I have a Leopold 3x9 as well as a 5 Star Redield 4x12 at my disposal. Not sure which way to go. Still looking on this one. Some folks i've been talking to are shooting 100 yd 3 shot groups they can cover with a dime with their 22.250. They claim they can shoot a 3 shot group at 600 yds and get em in a 3" circle. Time will tell.
