They probably already have an idea of what carbs to take back and where their problems are at, so buying a 1980 something carb off of ebay and trying this with that would likely not work in your favor.

Correct! A friend had problems with his Holley doing this, Holley has record of a metalurgical issue on certain carbs in a small handful of years, these they are still willing to replace. Good ole USA. . . or buy a Quick Fuel Technologies carb and be very happy 8)
