Quick question about BFG Radial T/A's

-
I have 205/70-14 on my Dart w/ 5.5" wheels. I think a 205 is probably the widest tire I would put on my wheels. Of course, the series of the tire may make a difference. Not sure if going with a 60 series would lessen the bulging effect or not. Perhaps an expert on here can either debunk or verify that.

Not too much bulging going on yet, as you can see, but anything bigger would probably be too much tire. My advice, as others have pointed out, is to take the wheel off and make sure it's a 5.5". Only takes a few minutes to check. Good luck.

205/70-14 is appropriate for a 5" rim, while not optimum on a 4 1/2" rim, 1/4" per side, side wall deflection is not going to make any noticeable difference in ware or handling or ride quality at all

Actually that's not quite accurate. The 205 tire is matched to fit a 5-7 inch wide wheel. 6 inch being the optimal. Therefore a 4-1/2 inch wheel is actually 1-1/2 smaller than optimal. Everything has it's limits which is why the manufacturer says 5-7 inch rim. Wear pattern is said to change with too wide or too narrow a wheel. Significantly?? I don't know. It's up to the OP to make an informed decision.

the problem here is that 205/70-14 is the narrowest 14" tire available in a BFG T/A so if thats the tire you want to run and you have 4.5" rims you have no other choice (short of buying new rims which is an excellent idea)
and published recommendations are always a bit conservative

That is disappointing to hear. I bought a set of 195/70-14 Radial T/A's from tiresavings.com back in 2007. Looks like they don't carry them in 195 anymore.

With that said, my Duster has 4 1/2" wheels and I wouldn't go any bigger than 195. Not only will they start looking like clown tires, but they won't be as safe. The 195's on my 4 1/2" wheels sit just like the tires do on the Dart pictured above.

You can still get 195/70's in a BFG Traction TA I beleve. A more modern tire T speed rated, I dont think there is a while leter version however.
