TTIs Vs. Doug's

-
Hopefully a hydraulic setup will come through for you. A guy at the Fall Fling had some Doug's but had the Keisler 5-speed and Hydraulic setup. Don't remember what mods he had to do. Goodluck finding a solution.

I talked to a guy at TTI a while back & when we first started talking he assured me they would work with the 10.5" clutch & linkage, but by the time we were through he was saying something like...All we have checked fit on is the stock setup, we can't check every variation, etc..... He suggested using the Keisler hydraulic clutch setup. I checked the Keisler website & the hydraulic stuff was about $500. Add that to the cost of the headers and the special starter & you've got nearly $1500. I think I'll probably just use the 340 Hipo manifolds I have. I might try to hook them up to a TTI exhaust system, but that's another $500 or so. Have you priced the factory heat shield/exhaust gasket for the left side 340 manifold? It's over $125! :banghead:

:burnout:

I used the stock shield and drilled the ribots out and riboted to a new gastket on my old 318 with the stock manifolds that I robbed from and ol 65 V8 Cuda.

I tell you, if they would had these headers back before I bought and cut my fenderwells I would of saved my pennies and got them, just to have under chassis headers.

Moparlee, I agree with you about cutting the fenders. I cut mine 30 years ago. Now I have a set of inner fenders to cut patch panels from so I can fix my "mistake". Live & learn (and spend money :-( )

:burnout:

When I talked to TTI the only issue they had was with the flywheel and the starter. They fit either a standard or automatic transmission. If you have the stock 10" flywheel you can use a regular mini-starter. If you it's larger you need their Powermaster Adjustible mini-starter $240.

The picture here is from the TTI booth at the latest Fall Fling. It is a 340 motor in a factory 4-speed 65 Dart. I would think he has the larger clutch. Unfortunately, this guy had not put the Z-bar and clutch fork in yet. Nor did I ask the owner if he was going to use a hydraulic clutch. He was having the work done by someone else.

I took the risk and went with the TTI's not knowing if the tti's would clear the Keisler 5-speed, Lakewood Bellhousing, and Hydraulic clutch and powersteering. Just a couple years ago, the Doug's were originally $1000 before TTI came out with theirs so I figured it would be a wash in the end. For the extra cash I was hoping to run into less problems. So far that has been the case. Sorry but it seems like the tti's (couple hundred dollars extra) might have been the route to take? Like you said live and learn and hope you don't get burned. That was a killer price too.

That's the thing - it's not the larger bellhousing that is the problem with the Doug's and possibly a problem with the TTIs, it's the clutch fork. I'd love to get some concrete info (at least for others) on if the longer 10.5" clutch FORK and Z-bar still works with the TTI's.

I would like to know as well, as I am going to need a set of headers for my '65 Valiant. I will likely be using a Lakewood scatershield though, so that throws even more stuff in the way. I am converting from an automatic, so will be using a hydraulic clutch setup as well. I might even consider one of those hydraulic throw-out bearings if I need to get away from a clutch fork.

Does TTI have an email address? I haven't seen one on their site.

Go with the TTI's. You should have no problems with the Lakewood if you get the Hydraulic setup. Call them. It's easier. Tti's are a hot topic for these early a-bodies.

Well, that's a pretty sweet picture! How much clearancing is required on the trans tunnel with the Lakewood? Which Hydraulic clutch are you using?

I do have one little hang-up on my project. I'm using W5 heads. I know TTI offers a W5 flange. Heck, they even offer bolt on W5 headers for later A-bodies, but for now, I'd be happy with a set of bare (uncoated) TTI headers and a flange set, and modify the pipes to match and get rid of the step. Otherwise, it's full custom headers by me and my brother. He does exhaust and custom headers for a living, but starting with the TTI's would be easier. I just don't want to hack up new expensive coated pipes.

I love making my life difficult... first the '65 Valiant... now the W5 heads... in the '65 Valiant. :D

I'll let you know when I get there. Thats if I ever get my car back from the painter.
