I have a chance to get 2 904 trans that are late 60's that will go behind a 360,is the late 60's 904 ok and how do I tell what year it is?
thanks

i wouldnt use the early ones, id try to get a later yr,non lock up trans.. a-999/998 trans.. then id upgrade to the lower 1st gears set..

what years should I look for?
thanks

The late 60s trans is fine. Low gearset in the 998/999 was brought about to help launch the heavy *** Fifth Avenues with weezer 318s off the line well. Most of the time, those gearsets are really too low for the light A bodies and really unnecessary. Couple that with the fact that the 998/999s are really gettin tougher to find and the 904 looks better. You can upgrade the 904 with everything to make it an A999. Even the low gearset if you want it. You can find everything you need here and cheap.

The 999s had either a 4 or 5 disc direct drum. You can a 5 disc one there for less than 60 bucks, just as an example.

if you use a 60s model, upgrade to a 5 clutch disc, and a 4 clutch..tf2 kit, good TC and govenor, the low gear set works decent with 3.23 gears..but but the time you purchace the parts to change your over, miht as well buy a late 70s with the ow gear and 5/4 clutch packs already in it..

Don, I agree 100%, but they are really getting harder to find. Also, remember, not all 998/999s came with five disc direct drums. A lot of them were 4. Did you go to WIT Trans and look at their prices? Those 5 disc direct drums they advertise for under 60 bucks are remans LOADED with brand new clutches. Can't beat that with a stick.
