5 point harness in a car w/o roll cage...How to do it?

the federalies mandated shoulder belts in 68. before that they were an option but not required. (any) car built prior to 1968 cannot be ticketed for not using shoulder belts unless the car was equiped with them.

dam so this means i gotta find a set of sholder belts for my cuda, anyone got any
 
Just installed a set of those Wescoperf 4- pointers in my '67 dart. Work nicely but IIHITDAOA, I would get retractable the 3- point type....You have to loosen the shoulder straps to reach anything or even look around...very similar to the racing type-4 point....albeit more comfortable. But still mucho safer than the original lap-only system. I used a big thick washer to anchor the floor mount..

(If I had it to do all over again)
 
Technicly a racing belt that doesn't have DOT label on it isn't street legal.

Ok Back to answering the Question posted...The answer is no, because you cant mount them properly. In order to mount the belts properly you'll need a cage with a cross bar mounted no lower than 4" below the drivers shoulders and not above. (According to the NHRA rule book) Reason being is if the shoulder strap mounts are too low it will tend to crush your spine in an accident. Not a good thing.

You didnt mention if you wanted too, still use the rear seat? I have the same style bucket seats not installed yet, but here's a pic for location of the crossbar. Everything forward of the main hoop you can eliminate.

I spoke with the folks at Corbeau about their harness'. Acording to them, a cage is not REQUIRED for for anchoring of the shoulder belts. It IS preferrable, but they said the should belts can be mounted further back in the car and anchored to the floor, as long as the angle of approach for the belt to the seat back does not exceed a certain angle.

I can't remember what it is off hand, but I have it at the house. Their belts have 70 inches of extra belt to mount them back around the rear end tunnel, making the angle very do-able.

I am using a different solution. I have removed the rear seat, and am planning on fabricating a brace bar that will span from one side of the car to the other. The interior side body on each side will be reinforced and have mount nuts welded to the interior plate. I *think* the bar will be 1x3" 3/32 or 1/8" wall bar stock. I am going to mount it high on the body, and then angle the bar so the belt is pointed directly to the pass through holes on the seats.

I am also planning on using Corbeau's retractable harness...so the actual retractors will be mounted to the bar.

NHRA legal? Dunno, Don't care......

Yes, I was wanting to keep my back seat. Since I have been gone I have been studying up on cages and paying attention to how other people have done them and I think I am going to make up a cage to put in my car, main hoop on back. Thanks again for everyones input I have definetly learned a great deal! Thanks again!
 
FYI - Summit is selling Procar Scat racing seats for $150 each, with sliders. These are mine, that I just received. The direct bolt in brackets are on their way, and I should have them within a week.
 
For the guys that have a shoulder strap mounting points from the factory but the factory straps are either missing or wornout, I always wondered if you couldn't just use one of the racing shoulder harness straps mounted in the factory shoulder mount, at least it would be a three point instead of just a lap belt.
The lap belt could be adjusted farther to the inside so the shoulder beld would go farther across your body like the factory ones do.
Any thoughts on this?
