Passenger dies in fiery crash; driver sought

One person died in a one-vehicle crash Monday evening on Route 14 in Millport, and police were searching for the driver, whom they said fled on foot.
WENY-TV, this newspaper's news partner, reported that the car hit a house on what is Main Street in Millport, killing the passenger.
No other information was available Monday night from state police in Horseheads, who are handling the investigation.

Elmira man charged in vehicular death of Painted Post woman
New York State Police at Horseheads on Tuesday charged an Elmira man with second-degree manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal incident after he allegedly ran from his car after it crashed Monday evening in Millport, killing a Painted Post woman.

Upham, 24, of Franklin Street in Elmira with driving recklessly on state Route 14 in the Village of Millport, where his car struck a tree, a house and a parked vehicle. They said he fled on foot into a wooded area.
Kaylah A. Morse, 22, of Kens Boulevard in Painted Post, a passenger in the car, died in the crash, troopers said. They said she was wearing a seatbelt.
Both charges against Upham are felonies. Second-degree manslaughter is a class C felony, and leaving the scene is a class D felony.
State police K9 and aviation units were used to try to find Upham on Monday night and into Tuesday morning. The State Police Special Operations Response Team and investigators from the Chemung County Sheriff's Office and the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted.
But it was a tip from a citizen at around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday that led police to Upham. They learned that he had been dropped off near his home, and negotiators contacted him and negotiated a surrender without incident, police said in a news release.
Upham was taken to Arnot Ogden Medical Center for treatment of injuries that he sustained in the crash, police said. He was later released and taken to the Horseheads State Police barracks for questioning.
Upham was arraigned in Veteran Town Court and was sent to the Chemung County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash or $200,000 property bond.
