Rear End Questions...

Get an 8 3/4 for that type of money. I got my A-body 8 3/4 complete ( but with 2.76 open diff.) for $300 and it wasn't even crusty looking.

My 2 cents.

Unless you're running a 4 speed/transbrake and dead hooking a big tire, any of the 3rd members/pumpkins will work just fine. No offense to the poster that put those links up, those comparisons of 489, 741 and 742's are just good fodder.

I've beat on 741's behind hemi and 6 pack cars for years because they were deemed weak by others... ummmm OK.

Yeah, that was exactly what I said, that I don't think it would matter which he used or found. I was just posting the links to get him on his way of answering his question of what the differences were between them. If those sites offer any opinions, sorry for confusing... there's specs and history that may be of interest though.

I have 2 that I would sell.Crackedback and blueswinger are correct, all three of these centers will work great.I have all three types of cases.I have heard lots of different opinions, and that is exactly what they are, opinions.Shipping is not cheap on these and that is usually what kills a deal.Any way good luck on your upgrade.

Agreed. Great for information.

Guys love the 489's because of the larger bearing yet they have the POS crush sleeve that eats them up. Go figure.

489 and 742 have a stress riser on the pinion that the 741 lacks.

All neck down to the same size at the yoke.

All are good units.

So what about the 8 3/4 B-Body? Where do you have to move the perches? Is there instructions on this or a picture to use as an example?

You don't need to move the perches, you can press the springs out eh 1/2" per side.

The best and correct way is to move the perches in 1/2" per side.

One downside to the B rear, it is wider so you need rims with more offset to get the tire back in your wheelwells. It's a popular swap. 65-67 B's are the best choice then the 68-70 B rears.

If you do the B swap, use a plumbob to get the axle centered up in the wells. You can also set pinion angle while you are at it. The cars usually aren't perfect to either side. My Duster has 3/8" bigger rear wells on the pass side than drivers.
