Getting ready to add tires/wheels & wanted opinions from a few people.

Picked up a pretty well used set of steel Cragar S/S. 2ea 14" & 2ea 15", they cleaned up fair enough. Want a bigger tire than a 205 but dont want to have clearance issues in the back. This is what I was thinking, your thoughts?

Front:
225/70 r14

Rear:
255/60 r15 (preferred if theyll fit)
235/60 r15 (alternate)

Furthermore, I like the look of the BFG T/A's but the Firehawk Indy 500's seem to get better reviews by consumers. Can anyone shed some unbiased feedback on a comparison? Thx

I have the 500's and love them. I have also had a set of T/A's on a different car, and while they were awesome in the dry, they were slippery in the rain. But since they were different cars (T/A's were 225/50/16's on a BMW 535is) it's kind of apples and oranges. In your area, rain performance is probably not a big consideration anyway.

I will say that depending on the width and backspace of the rim, if you run the 225's up front, you might very well have clearance issues. DEFINATELY don't try and lower the front. My experience with 215/70/14s on 5.5" rally's on the front of my '73 disk brake equipped Duster was that after lowering the car significantly, the outside tire would rub on a tight corner. I have since raised my car back up to near stock height (I prefer it, just wanted to experiment).

Thank you, Dropping to the 215's is probably a safe bet then, Anyone have any info on the widest I can go in the back without clearance issues? I know I have an option of 215 70 15 as well but worry then about height.

i found this site helpful when looking for new tires for my 74 dart swinger
I put 215 60 15 BFG TA's on a 15x7 rim with 4.25" back space
I believe the tires i got are 8.5" wide and 25.2" tall
I have about 1/2"-3/4" clearance between the tire and inner fender lip and plenty of room between the tire and leafe spring
Every thing in the back of my car is in the stock spot
I have only drove the car aound the drive way a few times since the weather turned crapy befor i got my rims but i don't see any clearance problems.

Size wise, I had 215-70-14s on the front of my Dart and 225-70-14s on the rear. 255-60 is a tight fit. The 235-60 fits well.

Here are the 275/60R15's on the rear of my '73 Dart with the spring relocation kit. No rubbing of the quarters or suspension. :burnout:
