Will a narrowed Dana 60 fit in an early a body? The fuel tanks looks very close to the stock axle in my 64 Barracuda. Thanks.

Yes, the factory axle is a 7 1/4. I was on the Moser sight pricing out an 8 3/4 replacement. The price of a Dana 60 from Strange or Moser is about the same price of the 8 3/4.

I am going to put a mild 408 stroker in the car and will not need the added strength of a Dana...but if they are almost the same price I am tempted.

Go with the 8 3/4 it will handle anything you throw at it with the right parts. Plus it's a hole lot lighter than the dana.

However, with the added weight you won't even loose 1/10 of a second.

It all really depends on whether you want the ability to easily swap gear ratios. If you want to drive around town with a highway gear, but drop in a race gear before you head to the track, then go for the 8 3/4. If not, go with the Dana. If it was me, for the same price, I'd go Dana. You're only puting in a mild 408 now, but who knows about later.

If it's a mild 408, the 8 3/4 would be more than strong enough, plus you'll have the added advantage of easy gear changes.

Yes the narrowed dana 60 will fit. Thats what I plan on putting in my 65 Barracuda. If there the same price than its a no brainer for me, Dana 60 all the way.

Sharko, that is a good looking rear end....that sounded wrong...

I want to keep the factory fuel tank. Have you installed your Dana in your 65 and does it clear the fuel tank?

Thanks!

I think it's gonna' be close. I plan to move my 8 3/4 back an inch or so to center the wheels in the fender openings & it doesn't look like there's much room between the back of the center section & the front of the tank. Of course, there's always a big mallet....

I vote for the 8 3/4 for ease of gear changes, its plenty strong if set up right and this is from somebody with a Dana 60.

Yes the D60 will fit with the original gas tank. And yes I agree that if you plan on changing gears alot go with a 8-3/4 rear end. But if you plan on runnig the same gears most of the time or all the time, D60 all the way.
The D60 is hands down a much better rear end.

I have a Dana 60 in my 66 Dart, they fit with the stock tank but there is very little room to spare. I took out the fuel sending unit the first time I ran it through the gears with stock rear cover on the Dana. Sharko I don't think that cover will work with a stock gas tank. My car sits an inch lower than stock in the back and this might have given me the clearents problem. I had to dent the gas tank in around the cover to keep the rear end from rubbing the sending unit.
