Can someone please tell me what the Transfer Case Motor does on a
2001 Ford Explorer sport 4 x 4 .

When we turn the switch to 4 wheel high or low nothing happens. Checked
the fuses...they are ok.

The reason I ask about the motor is because the outside of it is rusty. I thought
it might have gotten hot at some time.

Thanks,

Tony

Hey Tony,I just had the solenoid and acctuaters replaced on my F-150 4x4.I,m not saying this is your problem, but it sounds like the acctuaters aren,t engaging.Good luck.

Um check you manual. I believe that mine i have a 97 explorer asks you to be in gear when you put it in 4 wheel did you try driving a bit mine takes a bit to kick in

Where would those be Scott?

This is my son-in-laws vehicle so I'm not sure of what I'm looking for.

Set it up on 4 jackstands and try it again.
Sometimes the gears are in a bind and don't want to engage.
Having it on stands takes all the worry out of it finally engaging....it ain't going anywhere.

Is it a dial on the dash? If so, the motor is for low range, and you must be stopped completely for it to engage. 4hi is engaged with a magnetic clutch inside the tcase. All 4wd functions on these type are controlled by the GEM module. You can engage 4hi anytime. Getting a light on the dash?
