I saw an ad in Upstate NY with a 1968 Barracuda Formula S for sale. The price was $8000, needs interior work and paint, fully running. My question has to do with the 340 motor, wikipedia.org indicates that the formula S in 1968 comes with a 383 v-8. The ad says that the numbers are matching. Is this fact or fiction?

Wikipedia is put together by volunteers, and has TONS of mistakes and misinformation.

That being said, it doesn't say that all Formula S cars came with big blocks. It says that the 383 was only available in 68 in a Formula S. I can cannot confirm or deny that statement.

Formula S Barracudas were definitely not all big block cars.

What does a fully restored '68 Formula S fetch these days?

these days??? depends on a lot of things,,,but remember 68 is the year of choice when talking about 67,68,69 barracudas,,is it a fast back or notch???? less notchs made,,with S package,, i perfer the fast back,,the 68 grille,,,and side marker lites,,the dash take a little geting use to,,,

In `68 the Formula-S Barracuda was available with either a 340 small block (which most were) or a 383 big block. The fifth letter of the VIN will give you the engine code P=340, H=383. Four speed cars seem to bring a premium, convertibles are also pricey. Try to bargain, the market is soft now and if you show people cold hard cash, a lot of car can be had for a good price. 8K for that car doesn`t sound too crazy but a lot depends on its condition, body style, drivetrain and what they mean by needs interior and body work. You can check the VIN and then look on the back top edge of the block on the drivers side and then on the corresponding edge of the bellhousing. The last digits of the VIN should appear there if it`s a "matching numbers" car. Nice restorations can bring over 20K.

Nice looking for being an upstate N.Y. car. Many of those cars are rusted out pretty bad but this one looks quite good. Looking at the firewall it may have been a QQ1 blue car, and it had A/C to boot. It looks like it`s all there save the compressor. I like this one! 8K sounds fair but as the seller says "show him the money" and you`ll probably get a sweet deal. It`s too bad you don`t have room for it but hopefully sombody here will make the fellow an offer he can`t refuse.

As long as there is no major structural rust, it seems to be a great start. Maybe you can get it for a little less but it seems like a fair enough starting price. You can make that 340 every bit as fast as a 383 while still looking stock and its much easier to work on.

I think this car looks like a pull the motor, tranny etc, paint it up, while the motor is getting a refresh, then pop it back together. Sound about right?

I've seen posts about this car, quite a while ago....like 6 months ago or longer. Pics are identical. Dunno if its traded hands or not, but the pics in the CL ad are the same for sure.

As far as whats involved with the "resto" cchrishefish...only someone that has looked at the car can give you an accurate and honest description. Pics dont do cars justice...good and bad.

Looks like it is not selling too fast. It looks like a decent project car for the person that wants to do it up right. I think it would be easier to come up with 15-20k , and less expensive to buy a turn key though.
