I was wondering how I should pull a 273 out of a 64 barracuda. The motor is stuck so I would have to keep the automatic transmission on it. Would it be easier to pull out the bottom or top? I'm not sure if it will even fit. Has anyone done this with a stuck motor and an auto in an early a?

If you drop the centerlink from the pitman arm and idler arm the motor will come out the top with the transmission attached.

pull it out the top, just take the bolts out of the trans, pull the dust cover/starter/bolts out of the mounts, rad, fan, exhausts, the converter will come out with the engine

You might damage your trans if you pull the convertor out with the motor as it will rake the convertor snout past the front seal if not braced allowing the convertor to pull straight out. Pull them as a unit, its EZ: Just make sure you lower the boom pretty close to the lifting plate as youll need alot of lift to clear the pans over the fender or rad support. Make sure you have a very clean floor and a planned roll out area. Its scary up there when you are fighting to get the cherry picker to roll over crap on the floor. Rotate cherry picker wheels so they are parallel to your extraction path prior to loading it up, it makes it very easy to start the picker rolling in the right direction. Drain trans or invest 3 buck in a trans plug for the rear shaft seal (might get away with an asprin bottle) You'll dump mass amounts of ATF while you are tilting the motor skyward to clear the fan over the rad support while maneuvering the tailshaft while its still in the tunnel. A load leveler helps but makes the boom all that much more farther from the motor and you dont want to run out of lift at the last minute, been there. You dont have to pull the hood but it makes it alot easier. They came in from the bottom, if you wanted to drop the K and related suspension parts, you could hook the front end and hoist it over the sitting motor.Trans/K member. Someone makes a mounting jig for this as well as a K dolly so you can just roll it out.

If you plan to overhaul the suspension, drop everything out the bottom. If not, you can pull the engine and trans together out the top if you're carefull. Your year has a bolt-on rear flange so there won't be any leaks there but you will have some at the speedo cable and shift/park cable holes. Get a cap plug assortment to fill those holes or just drain out the trans first. Strip off all the stuff on the front of the engine to make more clearence and keep from bending/scraping things. You might think about pulling the engine down to the short block and seeing if you can get it unstuck. Then you could just pull the engine and not have to worry about everything else.

Thank you all for your helpful information. I'll get back to you in a few months when it comes out.

I pulled the engine out of my dart last week with the transmision, without dropping the center link, and without issue. It is just getting the angle correct, and a little bit of rocking as you start to pull it. The exhaust has to be dropped out from undre the car. Starter removed, 90degree filter adapter, exhaust manifolds, z-bar, etc. The driver's side exhast manifold wouldnt come out, so I just let it lie on the steering box when I removed the engine/trans.

The only hang-up I had was the Hurst 4-Speed shifter bolt-on adapter got hung up in the tunnel on a seam, took a pry-bar to drop the end of the transmission down a bit and it came right out.

64barracuda,

I also have a 64 barracuda and this was my first early a-body. I pulled my motor and transmission out of the car together a few months ago. I found the early A to have a few quirks for removal. I was new to the push button transmission. I removed the cables from the push botton control at the dash. In hindsight, it may have been easier to disconnect from the transmission itself since you need to pull the speedo cable anyways.

The other quirk was the driver's side exhaust manifold. I was afraid of breaking a stud/bolt to remove the manifold. I was also afraid I would crack the manofold if I banged it around. I found it easier to remove the steering column. It was just a three bolts at the firewall, two under the column, one electrical plug and the connector at the box. This way there was to no side to side movement required to remove the engine and I could also leave the starter and 90 deg oil filter adaptor in place.

As normal, pull the radiator and fan. I use one of those engine tilt devices that let you change the angle of the engine as you pull it out. they are pretty cheap at summit or even harbor freight. The nicer ones are easier to adjust and have nice bushings for smooth operation. I have a cheap one and it has worked well for many years.

Have a second peson help you and take your time. I have done it by myself in the past and can say it is much easier to have someone control the the tailshaft of the transmission as you pull the combo while the other person controls the cherry picker and tilt device. I also like to put towels and or work mats on the inner fender wells/top of fenders as well as the top of the radiator support to eliminate andy scratches.

I hope this helps.

Shoot it will only take 2 hours max to have the complete engine and trans on the ground...........ohhhh you are in Minnesota, I bet it is really cold there. Nevermind!

What I believe he's trying to say is he cant get to all the flex plate bolts to get the motor away from the tranny because the motor is frozen up and wont rotate.....Maybe I'm mistaken.....but with the pictures of the engines coming out seperately....if your engines were frozen up as well...he's probably looking for how you did it.....Pleaze let me know if my thinking on this is skewed.....I went over it about 10 times in my head about the flex plate bolts.....??????

I've pulled both together without dropping center link. Take off fan, water pump, etc, radiator, dist, hood. Get the angle right, or get an adustable bar. really raise the car on stands.

This barracuda is also my first car. I thought the push button is really neat. I have already gutted most of the motor componets but I think I will leave the steering in. I aslo had the problem with the drivers manifold and low and behold if the front bolt hole cracked off when I unbolted it. I left it on for now and power steering takes up even more space. Why couldnt they make the car so you can fit your hands inside to fix it? Yes, it is very cold out and snow all around my car and covering the driveway. It makes me sick that I cant work on it but it saves alot of breath too.

Yes, Patch, that's exactly. Sometimes I'm not the best with words. I've got enought information now though so I should be good.
