Want to clean up a slant 6, been sitting and is full of grease/oil on valve cover, ect. I have heard that using "simple green" works well. Any suggestions? Just trying to clean her up before I dress her up a bit. Thanks all

I use Simple Green and purple Power, which ever is on sale. They both work pretty well, can't tell which is better, but you also need to get a brush for parts cleaning, tooks like a big round paintbrush. The Simple Purple (which ever one you use) will soften up the grease, but you need to knock it loose with the brush before you hose it off.
The engine de-greaser works great if your engine is already kind of clean, but the Purple/Green with a brush will really get the nasty stuff off.

I had some young guns to do the scrubbing and digging out all the build up using this stuff, I kept it soaked for a couple days and they sure stayed busy bending over the fender's :cheese:
After it was all clean and ready for soap and water I let it dry for a day , then picked up a quart of Denatured Alcohol and poked a hole in the sealed cap and sprayed it every where it rinsed everything off so my paint would hang on.:thumleft:
Two coats of High heat primer "let it get sticky between coats" then let it dry, Then the engine paint went on, I did this last winter so you can see I heated the block before I painted it , no heat in my tent I call Victoria's nest

Still hanging on and looks as good as it did a year and 3k miles on it :toothy2:

You can try the engine degreasers or pressure washers in your driveway and then fight the eco-police or just take it to a place that still does steam cleaning and save a lot of headaches. Just remember to tell them NOT to put that silicone crap all over everything to make it look shiny!

Also , I cant just hose down the engine right? I have to steer clear of the dist and other electronics, whats the best way to spray this stuff loose after degreasing? Or should I remove part by part and do it that way?

Steam is NOT good for the rubber and plastic parts that may be either on your engines or in its compartment.

Using simple green, purple power, gunk and what have you is best even with a high pressure unit as long as it isn't steam. Try spraying the engine with your cleaner than drive to a self car wash and use their high pressure wand.

Zip lock baggy the dist, and remove the coil and all plug wires, I do know to take your time and try to enjoy as you do one step at a time, I put a $7 tarp under the front of my car and never hit the engine with water till it was degreased and soaked a couple times
Then I used a parts cleaning brush "the one that looks like a big round paint brush" I would remove the alternator "to easy" after you have all the chit off of it throw the tarp in the trash can, then rinse it down, remember the denatured alcohol if you are going to paint, it will remove all the degreaser and dust for you. Main thing is try and enjoy :thumleft:

Awesome guys, thanks for the good answers, Ill get this thing looking nice if it takes a year, I always enjoy getting under the hood. Just sanded down / stripped the whole car and grinded any rust away and replaced with welded steel if needed. Nothing better than american steel. Now that Im primed its time to get into the engine.

Thanks again guys

Haven't cleaned the Scamp's engine yet. On my newer car I use Simple Green. I don't use the Purple degreaser because it can hurt aluminum.

For rinsing I use the garden hose without any attachments so that the water flows downs the engine. Pressure from a nozzle can push water into sealed places like electrical connectors and whatnot. They should handle the pressure but just want to be careful to avoid electrical issues.

Nice work memike, well done.:thumleft:

Well thank you efrienrich :thumleft: Time to get dressed and slicked up for a night of APA 9 Ball, To dang cold outside and windy to even think about doing my upgrades to Victoria, you have a dandy evening , It's good to be able to help when I can :toothy2:

oil eater sold through orielly will clean anything VERY WELL!! spray some in your engine bay, let it sit for a minute or two and power wash off. i GAURANTEE you wont be dissapointed!!

I use Dawn dish soap and water mix and apply in a spray bottle. Soak down several times and a good wash usually takes care of most of it. (After all ... Dawns motto: Cuts through tough grease. Its not the best, but for a non-harsh chemical clean it works.

Hook your pressure washer up to the water heater... It's not steam but a warm water source instead of ambient water temp.

Gunk works good, but the city tests for it in our drains at the shop. Apparently there is something bad in it. Diluted Dawn works better than I thought it would. The best thing we have found is some wheel cleaner from a company called Blue Coral. Our Hotsy steam cleaner is still the go to choice, but the steam has a way of getting inside connectors and such.

Back in the day, I learned from a a good friend what to do on a budget that works well.

First time I heard him say it I took a second take.....

"After work I have to shampoo my engine"

The best were Prell & Brec

Warm up the engine a bit and squirt the shampoo straight onto the engine, trans, whatever.. and go after it with one of those universal brushes.

It is unreal how well it worked, along the same lines as the guy who said Dawn dish washing liquid, that also kicks ***.

I use Castrol Super clean. I don't dilute it, squirt it on straight, give it 10-15 minutes, squirt it again, 10-15 min, squirt 3rd time, 10 min, hose it off with a nozzle on the garden hose, and usually it's pretty clean. I've done that on al engines with no damage, and it left the block almost pristine.

That is very good stuff, around here you used to be able to buy it at "Smart & Final", a smaller bulk store.

I have had some problems using it straight on machinery.
.

It softens most machine paints full strength.
