My '04 Ram 4X4 Off Road needs new shocks. I don't carry heavy loads in the bed and about the heaviest thing I would pull is the car trailer with my Oldsmobile or my son's Duster on it. Any recommendations?

Another vote for Bilstein. They are the closest to a custom built shock, that you can buy off shelf.

There are standard white body units from most of the aftermarket suppliers that are less expensive (Rancho, Superlift, Skyjacker), but none tailor the valving like Bilstein.

I put monroe reflex on my 97 4x4 ram, made everything nice and tight, so it exposed all the problems in my steering.

Once all the steering problems were fixed it drove nice, worth the money, and have a warranty at the parts stores.

Sweet! I'll do a little homework / bargain shopping. I have 3 major expenses and one major decision going on with the truck right now. #1) It needs tires (BAD!). It has had the stock Goodyear AT/S 275/70/R17's since I bought it. I am favoring a Michelin in the same size because they make a better riding / longer lasting tire in my experience. #2) Shocks! (The original reason for this post.) #3) My exhaust pipes fell off the other day. But a friend of mine is a Pypes Dealer and promises me a system installed @ dealer cost.

The major decision? My cousin can get me any Chevy truck I want at $200 over dealer cost. What to do? What to do? I love my Ram, but a new truck for that $$$ is pretty tempting.

New Truck !!!

Sounds like the truck just needs some maintenance items taken care of. Keep the ram and fix it. You will regret giving it up for a chevy. Oh, and remember, only pussies wear bow ties.

If you dont need anything super fancy then put a factory shock back on. I also have had good luck with Shwabs Mountain Ryder series.... wont cost ya a arm and leg and does the job with either one.

I'm keeping the Dodge Ram. I just can't swing a bigger payment right now. My company cut our annual performance bonus in half, lowered what they were matching on 401(k) from 5% to 3%, and anything over 40 hours I don't get paid for. I just wish the Ram got better gas mileage as I drive 120 miles round trip for work. Damn economy!

Sounds to me like you need to get a 500 "beater with a heater" off Craigslist for the commute.
I did the math on my 97 Ram with a much shorter commute, and I was spending 1,800 a month in fuel. If I get something that doubles my MPG from 15 to 30, I cut fuel bill in 1/2. If I get something that I can tweak to 45MPG, my 1,800 goes down to 600, and despite a few extra bucks for insurance and registration, I am saving 1,000-1,200 a year.

Something to think about.
