I have a 69 Barracuda with 10" drum brakes that I want to convert to disc on the front. I have spent hours reading posts and articles on this. I used to have a great write up on this but can't find it. I have a set of spindles, control arms and backing plates from a late 60's/early 70's disc brake A body car. I always seem to find that it is the little stuff that make projects like this difficult. My question is, what parts do I need that I can't buy from a parts store i.e rotors, calipers, master cylinder, proportining valve etc.? Is there a bracket I need for the caliper? Or am I better off SBBC kit?

I just purchased a front disc brake set up from ABS Power Brakes Inc. You use your 10" drum spindle, just unbolt your drum backing plate and bolt on the new disc brake backing plate it was to easy. Go online to there website.

You will need the Kelsey Hayes caliper adapter bracket, specific K-H rotor hats, specific K-H caliper mounting bolts, calipers with the retaining clips, proper K-H caliper cross-over fluid tube, new brake flex lines, pads, wheel bearings and the correct seals (inner and outer).

All of this available on the internet. Look at the Moparts technical site for exact K-H parts - aftermarket vendor numbers - for the calipers, pads, brake hoses, rotors, bearings and seals.

Also the Mopar Action website has info. on swithcing your car to LBP, as this may be the cheaper way to go.

You could sell your SBP stuff and go LBP for less...

You can take a look at the picture of these calipers to get an idea of what others have answered about.
Might be of help to you, what the parts look like.

I have a complete disc brake set up under mech. parts for sale 2nd page. everything minus master cyl. which you should be able to get from most parts stores. If all you have is spindles, backing plates and lower control arms then you need alot of parts. i.e. hubs, rotors, wheel bearings, seals, calipers, lower balljoints, brake pads and retainers. For the price I'm asking it's hard to believe you can buy the partsfor much less. By the way if you purchase used calipers good luck and try to rebuild them I quarantee you'll be buying 8 new pistons at aboubt 120.00 bucks. Read the post and if this interest you P.M. me.

You can buy rebuilt K-H 4-piston calipers with a warranty.

Centric sells these as well as new rotors, for reasonable prices.

The pistons and seals for rebuilding the calipers are available, but can get pricey. A couple of members had some info. on using the same pistons as those used on the 1967 Mustang calipers.

As stated, you are most likely better off - meaning you will spend less money -
buying rebuilt calipers with a warranty.

Outside of the rotor hubs/hats, you should be able to buy everything through Rock Auto, NAPA, or other auto parts suppliers, for reasonable prices.

Use the Search function on this forum to find parts numbers and other info. about the SBP K-H parts.

I'm trying to order up some parts ahead of time & can't seem to find the info I need.

I've searched on Moparts & here & also looked at some of the auto parts sites & don't know for sure what I need to get. I want to swap on my SBP brakes & I'd like to buy new wheel bearings & seals for them but I haven't dis-assembled the stuff I have yet (Too freaking cold in the shop). Can anybody tell me the part numbers for these parts? All of the parts sites just list things by brake diameter & they either say they fit 9" brakes or they fit 10" & 11" brakes. Are they talking about discs when they say 11"? They never make any distinction between disc or drum when listing bearings or seals. Just diameter & whether it's an inner or an outer. Thanks for the help!

10" or 11" will work for 66-72 cars with SBP - I don't know either if it's drum or disc size (did they offer the 11" HD drum pre-73?).

Anyhow, the bearings you want are considered A2 (front outter) and A6 (front inner) these will fit SBP spindles, also get the front inner seals, again for the 10" or 11" brakes. Some companies rename them S2 or S6, as long as there's a 2 or 6 in the part number and it's for the pre-73 you should be okay.

Thanks! That's the info I needed. One site just listed them as Set 6 & Set 2.

Well, crap! I thought that was all for the info I needed. I figured the bearings out. Now I look at wheel seals & they list 3 different ones. 9", 10", & 11" brakes. I know they never used 11" drums on these cars & the disc is almost 11" in diameter, just not quite. Is the seal for 11" brakes the one I need?

You will need the Kelsey Hayes caliper adapter bracket, ...

If I remember right, the calipers bolt directly to the knuckle on KH OEM disc brakes. As Vs29H1B said, You also need a set of original rotors as the replacement rotors do not come with the hub/hat.

if you already have 10" drums why don't you use the F/M/J brake rotors pads and calipers? there much cheaper

Get the ones listed for the 11" brakes. They are very similar to the ones for 10" drums and may even work the same but the width is different:

10" Drum - Shaft Size=1.73", Housing Bore=2.336, Outer Diameter=2.34, Width=0.47in

11" Disc - Shaft Size=1.73", Housing Bore=2.336, Outer Diameter=2.34, Width=0.25in (This matched the size of the old ones I'm replacing in my KH SBP setup)

I got the ones for the 10" drum the first time, I haven't installed them yet so I'm going to swap them out for the disc variety. Even though the drums variety is wider I pieced them together and I think they'll work with discs anyhow.

Thanks again. Sounds like you're the guy with the answers! :thumblef:
