I'm new to the site, but often view it for help on questions that I have. I have a 68' 440 that I'm using in a 1927' Ford Model T. I have wired everything as the wiring harness kit instructed me to do. I am having trouble with the voltage regulator. It smokes if I have the key on for too long. Here is the diagram I have to illustrate how I hooked it up and a picture of the alternator.

Am I not getting a good ground? Is the regulator getting too much juice? Any help on the matter would be great.

What you have there has been "aborted." It is now set up for the 69 and earlier regulator. At the back of your alternator, notice that in the picture, there is a brush on the left --opposite the open hole. This brush is grounded. The other tab up at the top is the insulated brush

A REBUILDER drilled the open hole you see towards the right. They wouldl have REMOVED the grounded brush on the left, and installed an insulated brush in the right side hole, thus CONVERTING this older style unit into a '70 and later "isolated field" unit

In other words, as it's set up now, use the older regulator and diagram on the left

I dont mean to jump in on your thread but Im sure Im not the only one on this site that would like to see pictures your car. It must be hard to keep her down, seeing its got a few more horses than the original motor.

Thanks, for all the replies. I have set it up the electromechanical way and found out the reason why the regulator was smoking was because it wasn't grounded. So I took some paint of with a screwdrive and made sure it was touching metal. No more smoke and I am still getting a good break in the voltage.

Here some pics of the 1927 Model T Roadster pickup I have built. It still needs a bed and some a few other things.

Again, thanks for the help.

But ....wait.... is that an "A body?" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

(No, you said it was a T.......)

Have you got maybe some motorcycle baffles or sumpthin' like that in those pipes???

No need for baffles. There is noise regulation on something that old. And if I register it as an Antique I shouldn't have to get an inspection.

I know that this not a 'A' Body. haha
