Driveshaft Strength ?

I am building a 74 Dart Sport that was originally a 318/904 car. I have installed about a 650 hp 440 with a 4 speed and dana 60. I need to have my driveshaft shortend a couple of inches. My question is, is it worth it to have it shortened or should I buy a stronger piece?
 
Depends. Can you afford something aftermarket? If so go for it.
 
With that many ponies on tap, not to mention the 4 speed, a better, stronger piece with stronger yokes and 1350 series u joints sound like a really good investment. Sounds like its going to be a fun one to drive.
 
I wasn't wanting to have to replace it because this project is taking alot more out of the pocket than expected, but what are you going to do? I just don't want to waste the time and money on shortening it if its not going to last anyways. Thanks for the replys.
 
I agree with badsport. Peace of mind comes with a well built drivetrain. You can rest easy if you put in a very strong driveshaft/u joint combo. Im going to have about the same level of power and I dont want the driveshaft coming at me through the floor!

I have heard mention of an outfit called Denny's driveshafts. Supposed to be indestructable,but Im sure it's big $$!

Did a quick read there and they offer a free replacememnt warrantee if you ever manage to break it.
 
Just see your local driveline shop......

If you have 7290 series you can keep that too..

What he said; easy to replace front yoke with 7290; you have to live with the rear end yoke, if it ain't set up for a 1350, ......live with it.
 
Get a driveshaft from a late model diesel truck. Practically all newer engines are rated at 650 ft;lbs. or above. Just a thought.

A new heavy duty piece is a must have with that much horse power.
I think it's cheaper just to buy a new one anyways.

Don't do this.....

here's why, you have no idea what that shaft has been thru...and they are HEAVIER, and maybe you got an old shaft from a truck like mine, that drag raced off every light with 10k behind it and had 850 ft lbs, hammering that shaft all it's life...

Stl shafts only have a 3% rate-twist before they fail, which means if they have flexed or twisted 3% you are starting with a shaft that is compromised.....

You also do not know if that shaft is slightly bent, and are wasting money....

Just See your LOCAL driveline shop, if you have one, and speak with them, if they aren't sure, then ask me and i'll tell you what you need to know to tell them what they need know....

If youp have an honest 650 HP and are not bench racin with that figure, why in the world would you want to go the cheapo route on a drive shaft?

And use the heavier shaft...

Many, almost all the mopar shafts had a inner harmonic set up, a tube within a rubber bushing usually adding another 6 lbs to 10 lbs..
