Hi.... having a big debate amoung my drag racing buddies on which side of the trunk is best for a trunk mounted battery. Seems like most trunk mounted batteries are located on the passanger side. Can anyone tell me why? It is the drivers side that picks up due to engine torque, so it would seem that the drivers side would be the side to place the weight???? Help

I got mine on the pass side to off set my fat *** on the driver side !!

67dart273 is 100% correct. That's why the '68 Hemi Darts and Hemi Cudas put those monster batteries on the passenger side of the trunk. Also helps to locate them as far back as possible to aid weight transfer.

Same reason as an "open" rear axle almost always spins the right side tire only, and

if you look at a launching car from the rear, unless it has some fairly radical suspension, it always launches with the right side low. This is because of the torque of the driveshaft is actually trying to twist the axle up into the right side of the car against the springs.

Any car that just starts to daylight the front tires will always lift the left front first

Like so (sorry it's a Ferd)

The right side is the time honored location. As mentioned, it's because that's the side that tries to lift.
It can depend on the spring, too. In the mid 90's, a friend and I installed Tri-City Competition leaf springs on our Road Runner. Greg Luneack, Tri-City's owner, told us to put our battery in the center, because it's weight had been compensated for in the design of the springs.
That has been a while ago, just something to consider.

Factory LO23 Hemi Dart thats restored:love4:
awesome car... i have had drag cars and i have always monted the battery on the passanger side. But, if the drivers side comes up. why not load down that sie? I am just trying to figure out the reasoning???

You like it, then heres some more pictures. The last picture is of it back in the day. It was at the Hemmings Muscle Machine sponsored Musclepalooza at Lebanon Valley Raceway last year.

oh my..... gave me goose bumps. I am putting together a 67 dart as a 273 4 barrel car. The best estimate I can find is that a 273 would have run I/SA, or H/MP. This started out as a GT restoration, but because the guy that sold me car kept all of the high dollar trim pieces (fender mounted turn signals, rocker panel mouldings, trunk filler panel etc etc, I decided to turn it into an "old school" street/drag car. It now has a dana 60, hemi style hood scoop, eventually a trunk mounted battery, and roll cage etc. I love these old style Darts
