Welcome to our world as we have to deal with these issues a lot of the time when dealing with American sellers. The duties and brokerage thing is the ***** (we know) and sometimes American sellers will not ship USPS. When that happens we are left with paying the enormous brokerage costs or refusing the delivery and going to the local UPS/Fedex/etc depot picking up the item and bringing it through customs ourselves. In all of this I have NEVER asked the seller to share ANY of the costs as I know this is not his fault.
