Am having troubles finding a dodge three or four speed I can afford. I do have a muncie and have heard you can get adapters to put a dodge bellhousing on it. Has anyone ever done this and if so can you give me some pointers!! Thanks

Why not sell the muncie, which should be worth at least $600 and could be as much as $1200 depending on what it is, and you could buy a mopar 4 speed.

That transmission is not ours, a friend has it.

I guess we should have ask what 3 or 4 speed standerd transmissions should we be looking for that will bolt up to a small block bell housing
AMC, Furd, and or a mopar, what kind is out there that will work for us.
Or is the A-833 trans the only way for us to go ?
I do know the /6 3 speed will work with the V8 bell housing and hold up under a light dirt racing stock car, who makes the A-833 ?
The short track will not need to see any shifting exept when in the pit's and loading the car on and off the trailor
Yall sure have been very helpful and thank you again for all your help and input :icon_smi::icon_smi:

HAHA, I totally agree on selling the muncie, but cant a friend of mine that I race with gave it to me and said if I dont need it to bring it back to him. And yes dad is correct this is going in my stock car so a three or four speed will be fine, I put that baby in gear and let it eat, wont be no hard shifting. Thanks for input I'm open for any suggestions

I like that book

I have had this book for over 20 years, I used it to learn about and rebuild the Borg Warner Super T-10.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Basic-Clutches-...328?pt=US_Nonfiction_Book&hash=item2c58ee0e90

It's good reference and can be found in used book stores for just a few dollars.

I modified a Super T-10 so that it bolts up "Natural", ( no adapter, no plates, nothing), to the early Ford Y block,( 223, 272,292,312)

Did it in 1983, that trans came out Very Nice.

I have done this type of work for many years.

Raised more than a few eyebrows when people took a peek under my truck.

LOL

The 833 4spd was made by New Process Gear Division. It sounds like all you really need is high gear for racing and first gear just to get rolling, if thats the case I would find a either a mopar A230 (non syncronized 1st gear) or A903 (fully syncronized) three speed. If you really want to get crazy you could remove second gear from the transmission to get rid of a little rotating weight. I think a 4 spd would be overkill if you're going to be in high gear all the time.

I believe your right about four speed. I would love to find a three speed but seems like they are harder to find. But the ones I found is as expensive as a four speed. Thanks for the advice..

Usually the A230 goes for a little over scrap value or free, its not a very desirable trans. The 903 is slightly more valuable (but not by much) because its all syncro'd.

We ran a three speed in our pro-stock, never used first only second and third. With 5:86 gears you didn't need first. Alot of the guys would take out reverse and first to save weight, but it must not have mattered cause we beat anyway. I sponsor a Mopar dirt car, I can see if he has any trans but they're in PA. Maybe now hat you have some numbers A230 or A903 your search might get easier. The 230 would work fine as you don't need the sync's down to first, second and third are sync'd. Even if you found one with bad sync's you should be able to use it.

Thanks check with them if you dont mind maybe we can work out a deal if they are able to ship.

I bet it did. What would you recomend for my stock car.

I would recommend the best Chrysler Manual you can find.

The one that suits your needs best, with the ratios that suit your use.

Let me say something...................

I found that Super T-10, mentioned above, in an a Big Block AMX.

It was "Hammered", the input shaft was loose as a goose and during disassembly loose ball bearings, shaped like jelly beans, many colored blue, came pouring out.

I bought complete rebuild kit, and did as much magic as anyone could to get things corrected, cleaned up, deburred, & polished.

Also I was lucky and a Max-ball bearing was available for the front bearing, so I didn't have to make one.

I also did all of the "Stick Only" mods, so that even if I cracked the case, and lost all the fluid, I could still make it home without parts welding themselves together.

I blue printed the dead lengths of the stock trans and the Super T-10.

They were like night and day.

Long story short, I put "A Lot" of work into that trans and it really came out beautiful.

The price at the wrecking yard $50

********************************************

Now for the mistake of not researching exactly what it was I was doing.

In my defense it was 1982, I was on unemployment and living in a little apartment in Auburn Wash.

That trans, as I mentioned, came out of a light weight two door Big Block car.

The trans was going into a 57' pick up with a 223 six cylinder.

This was a mis-match.

The maiden voyage showed this fact at the first take off.

The gear set of the Super T-10 was "way" to high minded for my application.

Looking at the rear end showed that the gear set was 223, highway gears.

What a mess.

I pulled the third member, and went to the wrecking yard, I made a deal with the guy.... my highway minded third member(excellent condition), plus a little something, and $20, in exchange for the lowest gears I could find in the yard.

Found a very nice 3.89 member and put it in.

It helped, but fact be known that trans belongs behind a strong V8 in a two door.

Moral of the story................

Know ahead of time just what ratios you need for your application.

Check and verify what the ratios are in the trans you are looking to purchase.

First gear was 2:23 in that Super T-10

The only one higher came in a Corvette at 2:20

I would really like to see the dead lengths for one of these Mopar manuals.

They are the only trans I have ever seen that compares,(by eye), to the Super T-10 when considering the length of the input shaft.

If a member can supply those lengths I can supply the ones for the Super T-10.

My friend Trace used one for a couple of years in his AMC Hornet race car, and still has it on a shelf.

He now uses some fancy automatic.

The Super T-10 is a "Very Strong" trans, if can be made to bolt up to a Mopar that would be a Great set up.

Creed, We have a member that is bringing two trans to pick from
A 3 speed out of a barracuda possibly A230 or A903 and one out of a truck.
We pick witch one we want. :supz:
We will meet him at Small blocks :sunny:

I found this by luck, no mention of Mopar in the title.

Maybe a member has a use for it.

This is what Creed was saying in the first post about finding a trans that is not ridiculously priced. This guy wants $1200 buy it now. I was on craigslist last night and found a half dozen 833's and the highest priced one (aside from the one now on ebay) was $400. There was one for $200. Maybe being OD is why this one is priced beyond belief.
Memike, I was going to ask if you checked with Bill, but now I see you did.

That sounds good dad. StrokerScamp sent me a pm about a three speed as well. Thanks everyone for all the help.

And yes i thought that was high myself on the tranny. First seen 400 and but then seen his reserve.
