You don't need a spring if your cooling system is functioning properly. The only reason the coiled springs were in the hoses from the factory was-that they used a vacuum to fill the system on the assembly line in a hurry, without the spring the bottom hose would suck shut and hinder the quick fill. This is stated in a Goodyear application book, I also asked a Goodyear engineer years ago and he said the same thing.
Possibly with today's high volume water pumps, this might not be true anymore.
