does cutting the dash on these cars destroy the "value" im not planning on selling the car buti would like to put a modern stereo setup in and that involves cutting out the arm posts so opinions? and if so lets see your original setups with a clever mounting for your aftermarkets

Thought I read about an outfit that retro's factory units with new innards including CD players,...I'll do a little homework...

Mine is in the glove box, works great and looks stock with the box closed. And a new glove box liner can be had for $10 if you want to go back to stock.

Mine dosen't work but is in great shape looks wise , so i'm leaving it in to fill the hole. I bought a Pioneer *track new in the box for retro and i'm planning on a single cd for the glove box.

My original radio looked great also so I just bought a stereo and made a bracket to hang it under the dash. Here's a couple pics

BTW: I wouldn't say that installing an aftermarket stereo "destroys" the value but I don't think it looks right IMO but you know what they say about opinions. :-D

The one thing I dont like about mine in the glove box is that when the iPod is plugged in to the aux jack it wont close. I am thinking about getting a cord and running it behind the dash and out of the ash tray, with a possible dock in the tray. I love to listen to old time radio shows while driving my old time car.

Does your IPOD have a straight plug or 90 degree angled plug? If it's a straight plug you can probably go to Radio Shack and find a right angle plug adapter. It may give you the needed clearance so you don't have to do all the extra work. Just a thought.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I have the strait plug now. If I get the angled one I am pretty sure the door will close and I can run the plug to the ashtray, which is easier to reach whale driving too.

thanks guys! so for the factory radio do you leave the power hooked up? or? is it just settin pretty? can you tee off so both work the speakers or will that mess things up? i have never done a "dual radio setup"

I have the back light wire hooked up on mine so it illuminates when I turn the headlights on but I unhooked the main power wire because I knew I'd never use it and I needed a power supply wire for the new stereo. I wouldn't advise trying to tee 2 radio's together because each radio puts out power that has to go into a properly loaded circuit (the speaker). The original radio would probably survive because they were tough as nails but the newer stereo would probably burn up due to the impedance mismatch. You might be able to find a 2 way switch if you really want to keep the original radio operable but another problem you'd have is you'd need another antenna or another switch to switch your antenna from one unit to the other. I'm not even sure they make a switch for that??

There is a company called Retro Sound that makes a new style stereo that fits the old style holes, I have done some checking they seem like a good company ...I'm going to use there stereo in my dart. Do some searching other companies sell there stereos cheaper than Retro Sound does on there own site

Anything you do like that would lower the value a bit. There's some excellent suggestions here. Go with one of them.

at the local pic a part here there is a valiant that has the radio plate already cut..i might snag that for my car and keep the old plate with the old radio to add back the value. you might be able to do the same?

I found a two post kenwood AM FM cassette player that fit in the stock dash opening, no cutting, my truck has a CD player so the CD's stay in there, and all my cassette's stay in the car, I think CD's look out of place in an old car but cassette tapes look right at home and they still sound good

exactly what i was going to suggest, you can pick up some still new in the box 2 post radios on ebay from time to time.
