What would you like to see at a Car Show?

-
Well I like all those ideas, but I think a place for kids would be helpful at a car show. Its usually warm and sunny and kids get tired of looking at parts, I have 3 that I take to the car shows like the ad says. But there is nothing for them to do while dad looks for a new fender.

+1

Maybe some contest for little kids. Who can make the best engine or burnout sound, or give them some models to put together for judging. Just some way for them to get an award.

I agree with everyone on hear. The people that do the work on there own get no respect.thats how cars show are not who has the bigger ! .When I go to car shows I only take pictures of the cars that you know people worked on them.I think thats what it all about.Car shows have to give alot more sespect to the regulator guy.Oh good food that is priced right and what everyone on hear is saying. Mark

"Your standing next to a $50K car"...oh yeah? I drove here in a $62K Escalade..Seems to shut them down pretty fast. I like the guy that has the turbocharged 6 or the Ebay hillborn setup on a 318..you know they did the work and they seem to be way more enthusiastic when you ask them about it. Jeez, I could talk for 3 hours about the work I did on my car over 15 years.

Shows: Lets see, I DONT like organizers that put the queens out front and the drivers in the back 40. If people want to see princess, let them see a few paupers along the way. People selling purses..WTF? And I personally dont like vendors selling $90 buck oil pressure guages from a display case. I can get that stuff though Summit for 25% less...And blaring 50's doo wop music.."Play some Skynyrd, man!"
I LIKE: trailer Dynos, (sign up and everyone plus you guess your HP, closest one wins a freakin cap or something). Burn out contests. Car parts for sale area, raffles, trivia contests. How about a "claimer" class, nothing over $1500 bucks total invested? Maybe a celebrity car or personality that has a clue about cars, (Leno is awesome) Rick Smitts Ex NBA is a big Mopar guy and I think David Spade is too. And segregate the car makes, not in different areas, but maybe different rows. Ill walk right past the rows of red 67 Camaros, Mustangs and tri-five chevys that have repop parts that are made in Taiwan. Am I asking too much> Yes, yes I am.

I think you hit nail all the way in. And at some shows (SF) how about having some music (Skynyrd, ZZ).

To the people right next to the speaker, it's too loud. The people 150 feet way, it's garbled.

Also if you put it next the midway area, those vendors have to talk over that music all day. They are trying to help customers. We'd have to string it into the car show area somehow without people tripping over the wire and feed it enough power.

Also at Spring Fling the park trys to hit us with another fee and permit for "amplified sound". I think that more like bands though.

Great thread topic, John! A great idea to find out what show attendees want to see rather than just what the show organizers want to do.
For all those who responded to this thread question, or may respond in the future, here's what Inland Mopars Car Club has done at our annual ALL-MOPAR shows the past few years:
* Club members cars are shown for display only, they are NOT eligible for individual class awards. This has always been appreciated by non-members attending and showing their cars.
* We always have good music and the best food vendors we can find in the local area at decent prices (bacon-wrapped hot dogs - mmmmmm!)
* All show entries are parked by class (A-body, B-body, etc.) so you can compare "apples" to "apples"
* We've always had an "Under Construction" class. In fact, at our 2010 show the "Best of Show" winner won the "Under Construction" class a couple of years earlier.
* Always have a kids activity. Usually a coloring contest with nice prizes for the kids.
* Beer, open header contests, and burnout contests can be problematic - usually restricted by the show venue
* Swap/parts sales areas are also sometimes restricted by the show venue
* Event t-shirt sales can be problematic as well - tied to the state of the economy
* Raffles and Goodie Bag product availability is also tied to the state of the economy. Companies have been cutting back on providing freebies to give away.

...* Swap/parts sales areas are also sometimes restricted by the show venue
....

Swap is a huge spectator draw that helps T-shirt and food sales. When your swap at the school show was big it would pull our members from San Fernando Valley. When it got smaller, it was tougher to get them to go.

We tried that kid face painting at Spring Fling last Saturday. They didn't sell many face paints. They didn't even come back on Sunday. Tried something for the kids. Maybe we could just pay them a flat fee to paint every kids face for free at the show??...Trying...

I agree it's somewhat dissapointing at shows to see most of the awards going to people who bought what they brought. God forbid they cut their hand or got dirt under their nails building their cars. Seems to be more about, look what I have, not, look at what i've done.

FAR LESS TRAILER QUEENS!!!! IF you don't or Won't drive it into the show, stay home! IF you are coming from a long distance, park your trailer a few miles away and DRIVE YOUR CAR into the show!!! I have seen ONLY three shows that did not allow the "queens" in and they were great shows!!! Most everyone there WORKED ON their car and that made for GREAT conversations..... the owners of queens and the "buyers"( buyer= a guy that just bought a finished car and has zero idea what to do if it wont start) have very little in common with those that restored their own cars themselves.......most guys that restored their own, know what it takes, and did most of it over time and on a budget.....making choices over the years and sacrifices over the years and blood sweat & tears over the years, making the wife and kids go hungry to get those headers!! staying home every friday & sat night for years to save the money to get that paint job! All that to realize their dream and drive that car........those guys have nothing in common with the big bucks guys who spent big money and pushed buttons on a phone to get their rides built......those clowns wouldn't know a spring clip from a paper clip and frankly I wish they would all start up their OWN shows and kinda stay away from the shows that have guys who's hands got greasy & dirty and bleached out with carb cleaner, those that busted knuckles taking that bracket off.....those are the SOB's I want to hang with and BS with and get to know, because THEY have the skills and talent to make something from a heap of rusted parts.......the other guys are just no talent dollar clowns...sure their cars LOOK great...but they have no idea how they got that way other than the COST. It makes me sick when I hear them talk about their cars in terms of cash outlay....."I have 40k invested" " thats a 50k car you are standing next to" " do you like it?...it cost me 48k"...... those guys never speak of their cars in terms of loving the hobby or the vehicle, it's always about the money! I would like to NOT see any of them!!!
Couldn't have said it better

I wanna see wet t-shirt contests!!! That will always bring a good crowd. Well as long as the girls are hot. But if the girls are ugly then that will cause everyone to leave (it would be the effect if your in an elevator and someone pulls the pin on an *** grenade, when those elevator doors open, you bolt out that door to save your life).

Don't do many shows boring - to long - to hot and to many picky *** people out there.I do like cruise ins show up shoot the bull and leave

FOOD Hamburgers/Hot Dogs/Pizza is good

MUSIC My complaint is the "background" music is always so loud (yes I'm over 50) you can't speak with others without screaming at them. And why is it always music from the '50s? There is a lot of good music made after the '50s as well ('70s/'80s/'90s etc...).

GOODY BAG Either way on the goody bags. Its usually promotional key chains/pens/water bottles

JUDGING Don't really care about the trophy (mainly because my car is not a numbers matching show car LOL)

RAFFLE Yes, if it is a charity raffle or 50/50

TIME I like the all day events dusk to dawn. With the option of coming or going as you please aka cruising.

PS CEMA (Chrysler Employee Motorsport Association) is having our annual show (at the Walter P. Chrysler Museum (in Auburn Hills, MI)) on June 11, 2011. Please visit www.CEMAclub.org for the details. Let's get a FABO member area together.

There was a time that was fairly common at shows, but anymore Mopar and musclecar-era shows are family events.

I believe good shows happen when several auto groups get together. We all like Mopars but I have seen a lot of nice cars made by the other makes. Don't limit your entries.

*Contact your local SCCA group and see where they have a autocross. Have a "Show and Go" .
*Or is your at a drag racing track. Do the show and then have a bracket race.
*Have a class for kids rides, bikes, trikes, pedal cars.
*Use civic groups ( Lions Club, Boy Scouts , Etc, Etc)for vending foods. This will bring support from the local area.

I agree-best show are wide open to all. If it is a Ford/chevy/mopar only it is boring. I do skip the camero/mustang rows my self. I enjoy the European cars ( air cooled hemi V8 ) and orphan cars.

I attended a cool show today.

They had an open show, anything goes, lotsa donks, tuners, lotsa stereos on wheels.
A drifting contest.
Supercross stunt bikes (backflips) and stuff.

and car babes running around like mad.

Inside they had MMA fights, boxing, wresting, grappling.

Food, music, and did I mention car babes in skimpy outfits?

Got lotsa pics.
