Just blew on the second coat of chassis black and realized my punch mark had disappeared.

Can anyone tell me how to tell which spindle is driver and which is passenger, on a 71 Demon?

My guess is the spindle angles back, to the rear of the car. Odds are...I'm guessin' wrong.

It's the upper control arms and lower ball joints that are left, right. Spindles should work on ether side. Just depends on where you want the calipers, front or back.

If you have the factory Kelsey Hayes 4 piston caliper disc brake set up on your car, the calipers were mounted towards the rear.
But as others have stated, single piston calipers can be positioned to the front or the rear.
Just depends which position that you install the spindles.

71 Demon.....10" drums. The spindles definitely have a "cant" . I just don't remember if they install canted rearward or forward.

I gotta invest in a chassis manual one of these days.

Got love it when guys ask then argue with the answer they get.
The spindles are not left/right specific.

no edit....OK I am/was wrong here. Sorry

I couldn't find a good picture but it looks like the lean or offset is to the front. The top of the spindle leans to the front of the car. I'll try to get out to my shop later & look. I have a set of 10" drum spindles installed on a car I can look at.

yes they are right side left side specific, the lower holes are set up in an angle not perpendicular to the ball joint centerline which would put the lower ball joint in an inproper angle thus affecting bumpsteer, header clearance and who knows what else but heres some pic's of 10" drum setup, kelsey hayes four piston setup and big bolt setup the pics are of drivers side on all three setups for comparison, not trying to diss anyone but these are the fact's .................Wagg's pay close attention to the ball joint centerline then draw a line thru the lower ball joint mounting bolt centerline. The big bolt pattern discs are NOT side specific

Just came in from my shop. The top of the spindle definitely angles toward the front of the car. This is on a set of 10" drum brakes from a '69 Formula S Barracuda.

Basically, the one threaded hole in the spindle goes to the rear of the car. Pretty easy to see once you start assembling stuff.

I love it when people think they know everything.....and don't. Hehehe
They ARE specific, Mr fish. By the way, thanks for the shot. I will return the favor someday.

I really love this forum and have learned a bunch and helped a few people out. Mostly really cool guys. What I am sick of is the egotistical, know it all, smart asses.

I was wrong. Not the first time either.
Maybe I should study drum brake spindles before throwing them away. Maybe the punch mark should have been placed where they wouldn't be painted over. Nobody is perfect.

we've all been wrong at times it's no biggie......the pic's show the story.....I'm just lucky to have all this stuff around for comparison.....love the digital camera ...still haven't ran out of film.......:toothy7:

Yeah, but it seems like my kids are always killing the dang batteries in ours. I want to take a picture & either the kids have lost the camera or the batteries are dead. disgust

X2 on the digital camera
one of the best things I have gotten recently is a digital camera with a rechargeable battery, now I never have to buy film or battery's, it's great!

OK, not to steal the post but, what was the outcome on the big bolt pattern disks ? I did the swap, have the calipers in the rear (for future sway bar clearance ) and am having trouble getting the left side aligned. Maybe it has nothing to do with the spindles. I'm lost on this one.

check to see if the strut rod has been tightened to far or not far enough, playing with the length of that will bring the caster into specs

This is not correct LMAO. What is "correct" is, WHY ARE YOU sellin your waggin?

Wow, talk about reviving the dead..., this thread is from 2011!

And yes, why are ypu selling the wagon, and what about the awb car in the background, is it for sale?

I have several reasons to sell the waggin, 1 I have no place to store any cars and barely enough shop space to work on them, need money to fix up the other toads around the yard before they rot into the ground, and some personal issues I can't discuss at this time, car can be sold as a roller, can be sold without the disc brakes, interior anything you don't wan't , I will bolt a small block chevy in it if you want just as long as you buy the car....I almost threw up saying that but it's true...it has to go and the 71 demon clone and the 70 340 duster clone and everything in the yard, I am in love with none of it and need cash to fix up the others and sell them off too, dads orange and white cuda 10 k obo.

well if the strut rod bushings are wore out that will certainly affect castor and camber, if the bushings are in good shape and your still having a problem then upper control arm bushings a bent upper or lower ball joint will all have an effect on caster or camber so start looking for the faulty part or whatever is bent......I wonder why they sell those adjustable length strut rods? then agai they also sell upper control arms that are adjustable
