I was wondering if anyone could tell me if ordering parts from AutoZone online is a good idea? I'm replacing the ball joints, bushings and tie rod ends on the disc brake set-up going on my 72 Valiant and they quoted prices a lot cheaper than the local store. The guy at the store didn't have a clue what a Valiant was, kids!

I ordered 4 tie rod ends and one of them didn't come with the little baggy that has the nut, cotter pin, and grease fitting. I called them and told them two of them didn't come with them just incase they messed up again. and sure enough they did. They sent two baggies of stuff, but one of the bags was missing the grease fitting. When I called the first time, the guy on the phone said they aren't supposed to come with the hardware. Just goes to show you what kind of gomos they've got workin at those places. I did finally end up with the right parts, and they were cheaper than going to the store to buy them. I think you can actually order them online and pick the part up in person for the online price. I'll probably try that next time.

Thanks. It seems like you only have a 50/50 chance sometimes even when you go to the parts store. Most of the one's around the Eugene/Springfield Oregon area never have the same people two month's in a row. There's still one that uses PART'S BOOKS! No computers for them and they are usually right. I think I'll give AutoZone a try. If you order over $75 they say they'll ship it for free.

I haven't used Auto Zone but I order online from Advance Auto frequently and have had great luck. The free shipping is a plus to me because the nearest reasonable parts store is a 30 mi. drive each way. I hate to deal with the counter people anymore. Not long ago I needed a few 1/2" right hand thread lug nuts. The guy asked what car they were for, what engine, trans, 2 or 4 door and color. So I said '75 Plymouth Duster and he checks the computer and comes back with some fine thread metrics. I say wrong nuts and he says no you're wrong because the computer says so. Ok give me some for a blue '73 Mustang 2 door, 351 4 speed. He comes back grinning with some 1/2 rh lugnuts, smug in the fact that he knew what I needed more than I did.

autozone is the McDonald's of parts stores. stay away! rockauto.com is a better bet, and you can get better quality from them.

I will hardley even buy oil from Autozone. I hate going in the store. I used to work at Napa. I go into the local Napa every so often and get catolouges and look up the part up myself and call with part #'s. That way if its wrong its my fault. You can barely find a good counterman any where any more. They are to reliant on that damn computer that some minimum (sp) wage prick is stuffing crap into a computer that has no idea what he is inputing. When I worked at Napa we could pull up pics of the part. I looked up an air filter and pulled up the pic of it and there was an EGR valve. I don't know you tell me. I used the books as much as possible. For a while my manager got on my case but after he realized that my costumers weren't coming back and that it would only take about an extra min. he left it alone.

Rockauto is the way to go. I got a seal kit for my transfer case that was dropped shipped from the factory, all high quality stuff but shipping took a little bit longer than I would have expected. Price was excellent even including shipping. I had good luck so ordered a transfer case chain from them. Napa was the only other parts store that could get it @ $187.90. I got one from Rockauto for $125.00 and that includes shipping. The new chain was a Cloyes and was of much better quality than the existing Morse chain that I was replacing. I posted a 5% off coupon for these guys that anyone can use in the General post section.

I don't have stock in this company, nor do I, or anyone else I know work there. People seem really fast to bash sometimes but not so fast to give credit where it's due. So far, Rockauto.com is 2 for 2 for me. Hopefully, they can keep up the good work.

Oh yeah, I have two Checker Auto Parts by me. Store # 1 is full of ding dongs, Store # 2 has two really hard working kids in it. The kids in #2 don't pretend to know it all, and I ran 'em in circles one day trying to decide on a flex fan or a thermostatic clutch fan for my truck. I had them open the boxes and lay all the parts out so I could inspect the quality. After a 5 min inspection, I noticed the fan for the clutch was only rated at 4,000 rpm! needless to say, the flex fan got the nod. Not once did these guys get uptight or get rude. After I paid for my stuff, I got the adress of the corporate HQ and wrote a letter. I hope they get a raise! It's all about the people.

Very Good ramcharger :salute:
Glad you took the time.

Whether it's Advance or Autozone unless I am over the threshold for free shipping I print out a list (Autozone has a nice shopping list feature) and go to the store and have them order it, don't have to go through the make, model, etc. Also, when ordering from the store the parts usually come quicker.

NOTE: when using Autozone online the prices will vary some depending on which store you have set as a default. The online prices track your default store.

I'll look around at the other places suggested. I've got some time. Another one that get's me is Schuck's. I've been in there a couple of times wearing my Summit hat and they freaked out. They had two women working there that were really good. Both must have been to good and left. I'd probably be terrible at it after a day dealing with the public. I wouldn't make it in the next day.
