i'm trying to figure out the best cam set up for my 71 swinger.
i have a 318, with an edelbrock performer intake and carb (650),and flowtech headers. im looking to get a little more performance, and improve my sound. a mild lope would be perfect. any help with with determining the best cam for my set up would be greatly appreciated. ](*,)

A 340 cam degreed 4* adv
or...the comp 262*

Beware....the quest for lope can lead to a motor with soggy bottom end.

so consider wether you want sound over performance.

If it's low compression, I would use a thumpr cam. Install it like they want, a full 5° advanced and let it rip.

thats what im afraid of, a crappy bottom end.
i dont know as much about motors as id like, so should i hold off on the cam until i can rebuild? or is a mild cam ok?

I think the comp 260 or 268h woud be good. the 268 should have a fairly lopey idle in a 318.

cam it, it'll work ok, just have to work around the compression you have now.

I have a 318 .020 over stock replace pistons, ran a performer intake w/eddy 600,headers and 234 closed chambered 318 heads, it ran really good and had 135-140 psi cranking with a crane blueprint 340 cam degree'd 4* advance.
It ran good and still buzzed to 6100rpm where it shut off, thats all the cam it had.
But it makes decent power, has a lope to the ex note, and is reliable and street friendly.
I have never personally used the thumper line of cams, so listen to brian on that choice

you can have a lope, and bottom end if you pick a grind thats conservative in duration 250-260ish,and have it ground on a narrow lsa.the downside is it will have a narrow rpm range and will loose some vac.i ran an isky 256 cut on a 108 lsa in a mild 318.it had narrow ( 1400 to 4800 )power band, but was very responsive, and would rpm quickly.the idle also had a noticeable "chop" to it.

run the thumper cam it will work great in your combo ,iv put lots in and am very happy with them they are , great all round cam good vacuum and great sounding idle go to there site and listen to how they sound. hope this helps.

I would run a tight LSA cam with no more then 230 @ 50 duration.
You want to keep the power band as high as possible in any performance engine to make the most hp.
The thumper and whiplash cams do just that.

That old grind - the Comp 268H, that has a little romp in an otherwise factory stock 318. It also passed emissions for a couple years when I needed to and ran hard.

See if you can figure out what comes next......Edelbrock Performer carburetor, Edelbrock Performer intake................

The Edelbrock package ain't nuthin to sneeze at. It produces proven numbers without guessin.

i would never change cam to get that sound of power, i would build an engine to make the power that creates the cool sound, however i understand its not for everyone since it means you need to do a whole build.

i would follow anything sugested by OU812 he is very thrustworthy and always gives very good advice

I'd be weary of anyone who ''thrustworthy''...lol

I agree to this.

I have a 318 bored .040 over at 10.5:1, with weiand stealth high-rise intake, hooker headers, J heads, 600cfm carb, and a edelbrock cam. It surprised me with how much of a lope it has to it. Way more than I thought it would.

The only problem with the Edelbrock packages are the camshafts. In my opinion anyway.

He's just having some fun with you... you typed Thrustworthy instead of trustworthy.

LOL!! I love this board, you guys are always making me laugh outloud! And no offense to any other members on here...I see good advice all the time.
And thanks duster340.

I would run a tight LSA cam with no more then 230 @ 50 duration.

I ran this cam in a 9.5:1 .030 318 with magnum heads and it made good power, ran best 13.79 @ 101 mph in a 34oo lb A-body.

Lunati 00067LK

230 duration @ .050
109 LSA
.480/.480 lift

Very nice lope for a 318. People thought it was a 360.

That's the biggest i'd go for your set up.:thumrigh:
