I find these new Comp Cams roller rockers to be very noisey. Running a XE275XL Comp Cams .525 hyd cam and it sounds like a solid.
I'm at about 1/2 turn past zero now and have been told that I can go another 1/2- 3/4 no problem. I'm still old school thinking this is too much, anyone have this issue ??
Apparently it is the faster ramps on these new cams that play tricks on the hydraulic lifters. I'm thinking of just changing over these ones and putting in some solids.

Anyone have the same issue ?? Any success ???
Thanks 11

I've heard of that. It's more the cam than the rockers. If not all the cam.

That's a fast rate high lift cam. A XE268 or a stock 340 would be quieter.

I run a XE274S solid.

roller rockers seem to have a sound of there own...I call it a sewing machine sound.

I would have to agree with this one, I just put roller rockers in my engine, and from up front you can slightly hear it sounds like a sewing machine. It just gets louder as I am driving, I accecpt it as the sound of power... I guess. Everyone says it is normal.

I agree with the above, the sound from these is greatly affected by the cam.

I'm running a 274 extreme comp cam with crane rollers and it does have the sewing machine sound and were a pain in da rear to get right but everyone elses rollers sound the same

Seems to be a common issue. I might as well change the lifters over to solid then, if its going to be noisey I might as well get the benefits of the solids on this cam.

I'm running Hughes rollers on a .509 Purple shaft and at 1/2 turn, lifter compressed, they are as quiet as a mouse. Did you check your sweep pattern of the roller across the valve face through an entire valve closed/open/closed cycle. This needs to be done with a solid lifter or adjustable hydraulic (Hughes sells them) and as long as all the valve stem heights on both heads are the same I'd check both valves on No. 1 and 2 cylinders.

................U cant use solids on a hyd cam........the ramps are different........a hyd cam needs 20* more duration ......an old racers trick from back in the day was to put hyd lifters on a solid cam gaining 20* dur and the extra lift by eliminating the valve lash that the solid needs............its kinda like offset grinding the crankshaft to gain more stroke.....every little bit helps.......kim.........

Ya everything is as it's supposed to be. Its these newer profile Hi-lift cams, they have a very fast ramp and it tricks the hydralic lifter into dumping some oil so there is a bit of slack created. Seems everyone just lives with it, the clearance is constantly changing. I should have gone with the old .509, its always worked in the past ](*,)
I could always just turn down the adjusters until they bottom out the lifter, then it would be a solid !! LOL

I,ve got a solid roller cam. You think yours is noisy. I constantly think somethings coming apart, but I know its just natural. People see me roll thru and I can see their lips saying I bet that thing runs.

Man, just call Clay Smith and tell them you want a 308/.525" solid for that thing and don't look back!

Which rockers do you have? The aluminum rollers?

The Comp Cams aluminum rockers.
I'm tempted to try a set of the DC stamped steel to see what it sounds like.

The aluminum rockers from comp are supposed to be good. If you bolt on the stamped steel you can't adjust. If you have the correct pushrods you can try it but I don't think it's your rockers that are the problem. I would check and play with preload first.

I just don't like the noise, maybe I'll swap out the cam for a good old .509 purple shaft, they work well and sound great without all this crap !!

im pretty sure its the cam that sounds.

dont think its that much of a deal, there is always these litle things that are telltales on motors that are hotter than stock. my 340 with an xr280r is like that also.

Lol, the more I think about it, the more fun it would seem. With old 70 valve relieved pistons.

Are you saying you have roller lifters on a regular flat tappet cam?
I asked if that was possible a while back and you would have thought I asked what color the sky was.

I am certainly no expert on these things but by looking at the valve train it seems that the side to side clearance on the rockers, if not shimmed properly will cause the rockers to slide side to side, making the noise you are describing, just my opinion.

Sorry hit the edit button by mistake, same goes for Sport 360 below.

We're talking about roller rockers not lifters.

You can run solid lifters on a hyd, but not hyd lifters on a solid.

The face of the liyers are cut different, being that solid cams have always been faster ramped...the solid lifter face is more convex to accommodate.

The cam should not be making extra noise, I have never had that happen even using engle fast rates, the same rates ground for hughes cams.

Also the solids faster rate may just collapse the hyd lifter or eat the cam.

The rocker makes more noise, theres now moving parts unlike the stock stamped pieces, makes perfect sense..

but make sure the pre load is enough and that you do not have a slight push rod/rocker body contact.
